Earlier this year, Google announced a trial program allowing Spotify (and subsequently other apps) to utilize their own payment system and bypass payments on the Google Play store to reduce commission fees.

Google will still receive a fee for each paying customer with the User Choice Billing program. According to Google's FAQs on this program, when consumers opt for an app's own payment system, the service fee developers pay will be reduced by 4% compared to the regular fee.
However, Spotify views this as a step towards fairness across platforms and expanding payment options. Now, this online music streaming service has begun testing User Choice Billing in certain markets.

Google provides further details about the User Choice Billing trial program, stating that it's currently operational in over 35 countries (including the United States). Besides Spotify, the second major app to join will be the dating app Bumble. Google is collaborating with Bumble's team and will roll out this feature to users in select countries in the coming months.
