Squarespace Acquires Google Domains for $180 Million
The agreement for the purchase of Google Domain registration company by Google and Squarespace will be finalized in the third quarter of this year.
In a rather surprising move, Squarespace - the U.S.-based company known for building and hosting websites - has announced its acquisition of Google Domains, the domain registration company operated by Google. The price tag announced is $180 million USD (approximately 4,235 billion VND), with a portion of the transaction being paid by JPMorgan Chase Bank.
Google introduced Google Domains in 2014, initially calling it an experiment. Since then, it has grown to become one of the largest domain registration companies, managing around 10 million domains. Additionally, Google ranks as the fifth-largest .com domain registrar globally, with over half of its managed domains being .com.
The decision to divest from this business segment by Google comes as a rather unexpected move, aimed at 'helping the company focus more on other business areas.'
Squarespace will honor the current Google Domains renewal price for existing customers for at least 12 months. During the transition period, users will still be able to look up information on Google's website. Squarespace will also become the exclusive domain provider for any customers purchasing a domain alongside a Workspace registration package directly from Google for a minimum of 3 years.
