Watercolor painting is an incredibly unique art form. If you want to turn ordinary photos into unique watercolor paintings, then this article is for you. Creating Watercolor Paintings Using Photoshop from Real Photos
Step 1: First, create a new Photoshop file by selecting File > New from the Menu bar or use the shortcut Ctrl + N to open a new file.
Step 2: After opening a new file, now insert the image you want to turn into a watercolor painting by also selecting File > Place Embedded > choose the image from the library.
Here I've inserted an image of a tulip garden.
Step 3: After inserting the image into the workspace, duplicate the image layer by pressing the CTRL + J shortcut to have two identical image layers as shown below.
Step 4: Next, from the Menu bar, go to Filter > Select Filter Gallery to open the Watercolor dialog box.
Step 5: Once the dialog box is open, choose Artistic > Select Watercolor > adjust the parameters as shown in the image, then click OK to apply the effect to the image.
Here's my image after applying the watercolor effect.
Step 6: Continue duplicating the applied effect layer by using the Ctrl + J shortcut and name it Outline.
Step 7: On that layer, select Filter > Stylize > Find Edges to display the edges around objects.
As shown in the image below, we can see objects displayed with edges.
Step 8: On the Outline layer, change the Blending Mode from Normal to Darken as shown in the image below.
Step 9: To soften the edges, use the blending mode by selecting Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur to open the Gaussian Blur dialog box.
Next, adjust the Radius parameter to around 6.6 then press OK to blend the edges for a softer look.
And that's the final step. Below is the result we've achieved, turning the real photo into a watercolor painting as if it's been painted with watercolors!
