This guide provides a detailed walkthrough on how to remove and install a transmission in a 1998 Chevy truck.
Essential Steps

Place the truck in an area conducive for efficient work, such as a spacious garage or a level concrete driveway.

Disconnect the positive battery cable to prevent any electrical mishaps and potential damage to the wiring.

Raise the front of the truck using a jack. Ensure the front wheels are lifted a minimum of six inches above ground level. This allows the transmission to be accessed and removed from beneath the vehicle when it's lowered.

If the truck is 4wd, disconnect the front drive shaft. Next, detach the exhaust flange from the exhaust manifold and disconnect the electrical and transmission oil cooler lines.

Once you've taken out these parts, it's time to empty the transmission fluid. After draining, replace the fluid pan onto the transmission.

Detach the shifter linkage cable. After removal, secure it away from the work area. Additionally, disconnect the speedometer cable and the vacuum hose attached to the shift modulator valve.

Take out the rear drive shaft. This action should provide sufficient space to detach the transfer case from the transmission's rear, in case of a four-wheel-drive truck. Unfasten the six bolts to remove it.

Detach the starter from the engine and loosen the bolts that connect the transmission bell housing to the engine block. The front of the transmission will be supported by the splined input shaft and mounts. Ensure the rear of the transmission doesn't drop to prevent potential damage to the shaft, seals, or torque converter assembly.

Support the rear of the transmission using jack stands or a jack (ensuring the front remains stable). Take out the two bolts securing the transmission to the cross member and the four bolts attaching the cross member to the truck's frame. Then, remove the cross member.

Remove the transmission while keeping it consistently supported, shifting it towards the rear of the truck and aligning it with the engine. Slide it approximately 7 inches (17.8 cm) backward to clear the torque converter.

Lower the transmission to the ground and slide it out from beneath the truck, maintaining a level and upright position. Now, you can detach the bolts connecting the torque converter to the flywheel if it needs to be taken out for repair or replacement.

Reinstall following the reverse sequence of the removal steps.

Align the spline and input shaft to fit into the torque converter and pilot bearing. Ensure it's straight and in line with the insertion point. Ideally, support it at its balance point to prevent it from moving or falling. The angle should match the car's orientation. Lifting the entire car evenly would simplify this process.
- Gravity may resist complete insertion into the spline-socket and bearing unless it's perfectly aligned and supported.
- Supporting or lifting the transmission improperly can lead to instability, wobbling, or even falling.
- The spline grooves must align both vertically and horizontally.
- The input shaft can catch on the pilot bearing edge if the transmission isn't perfectly aligned and balanced.
- Avoid letting the spline bear the weight of the transmission alone.
Helpful Tips
- Perform this task on a concrete surface for stability. A floor jack might not roll smoothly on softer surfaces, but a sturdy, level 3/4 inch (19mm) plywood could be used on asphalt or gravel.
- A breaker bar with an extension pipe is often required. Using pneumatic (air) tools can expedite the process.
- A transmission jack (lifting directly upwards) would greatly simplify the task due to the transmission's weight and difficulty in balancing.
- A floor jack is less convenient as it needs constant repositioning, changing the transmission's location as it adjusts its angle.
Important Warnings
- The transmission is heavy and can easily tilt or slide. Use caution when lowering or raising it.
- Never work beneath a vehicle that isn't properly supported; a simple jack is insufficient.
- Transmission fluid is flammable and toxic. Take precautions and clean up any spills immediately.
