1. Open Document Outline in Google Docs
Opening Document Outline in Google Docs will be displayed in the left corner of the screen. By looking there, you can navigate to the most relevant and accurate table of contents. To open Document Outline, you need to create headings for the document content.
Step 1: Open the Google Docs page where you want to activate the document outline. Then, click 'View' on the Docs toolbar.
Step 2: Click 'Show Document Outline'. Additionally, you can use the shortcut keys Ctrl + Alt + H or Ctrl + Alt + A
The document layout will appear on the left side of the screen.
2. Add Headings to the Table of Contents in Google Docs
If you want to enhance the completeness of the table of contents in Google Docs, adding smaller headings can be beneficial. This makes it easy for you and readers to visualize the sections within the document, understanding which sections are major and which ones are minor.
Step 1: Open Google Docs for the document you want to enhance with a table of contents. To add or modify a heading, highlight the desired title (arrow number 1). Then, click 'Normal text' (arrow number 2).
Step 2: Now, the Headings 1, 2, 3 ... will appear. Choose the appropriate Heading.
Note: Heading 1 > Heading 2 > Heading 3 > Heading 4 > ..... Typically, Heading 1 is for the article title. Heading 2 belongs to Heading 1. Heading 3 belongs to Heading ...
At this point, you will see that the highlighted text will change its size according to the chosen Heading. Simultaneously, it will appear in the table of contents section.
Repeat the process until you finish. You will have the most comprehensive document table of contents.
3. Remove Title from Document Outline
Apart from enabling document outline and left sidebar table of contents in Google Docs, you can also delete a title if you formatted it incorrectly.
Step 1: In the table of contents section, hover your mouse over the part you want to delete.
Step 2: Now, the X mark will appear. Simply click on the X mark, and you will successfully delete that title.

4. Close, Hide Document Outline
Not only does it allow you to enable, but you can also easily close or hide the Document Outline if you don't want the article's table of contents to appear.
Close Document Outline:
Step 1: On the Google Docs toolbar, click 'View'.
Step 2: Click 'Show Document Outline'.
Immediately after, the Outline will disappear and display as shown below.
If you want to open it, you follow similar steps.

Step 2: In the Docs file, where you want to hide the table of contents, click on the arrow.
You'll notice the table of contents disappears, replaced by a small table of contents icon. To reopen it, simply click on that icon.
