If you are unaware, Windows 10 and various versions like Windows 7, 8, 8.1 come with background apps that can lead to severe battery and RAM consumption. While these background apps have benefits, they also come with drawbacks. Typically, users use the Registry Flashlight Fixer to check for hidden background apps before deciding which ones to eliminate. However, there's a simpler method to disable background apps on Windows 10, as you will discover shortly.
Note that this technique will only help you block, disable, or stop background apps on Windows 10 Universal Apps. Third-party apps like Chrome or Firefox won't be affected. For example, you can block Microsoft Edge from running in the background, but you can't prevent Chrome from running in the background on Windows 10.
Disable and Block Background Apps on Windows 10
Step 1:
Step 2: Scroll down to the bottom on the left sidebar and choose Background apps. This is where Windows compiles a list of background-running apps on your computer.
Here, you'll find an array of background apps listed on the right, such as Calendar, Maps, Alarm & Clock, and more.
Step 3: At this point, simply choose to block the unwanted background app by toggling the On >Off switch to turn off background apps on Windows 10.
This is an effective method to disable background apps on Windows 10, preventing them from hogging system resources. To identify which apps are consuming your computer's resources, press the Ctrl + Shift + Esc key combination to open Task Manager. Alternatively, right-click the bottom-left corner of the screen to open the context menu and select Task Manager from the list.
In Task Manager, you'll find the App history section, which tracks and reveals the apps consuming the most resources. Unfortunately, this tool doesn't allow you to block or disable background apps on Windows 10.
Background apps are often the cause of system freezes, frequent restarts, and, in extreme cases, the need to reset or completely ghost Windows 10. However, repeatedly ghosting Windows 10 can be detrimental to your computer, and not many people want to go through that.
To avoid additional errors caused by background apps, it's advisable to keep Windows 10 updated to the latest version. Updating not only fixes issues caused by background apps but also ensures you have access to the latest features from the developer.
As Windows 10 is relatively new, some games and software that previously only supported Windows 8.1 or earlier may not have been updated to be compatible with Windows 10. However, there are ways to run older games and software on Windows 10 without reinstalling the old operating system. Refer to Mytour's guide on running older software on Windows 10 for more information.
Wishing you all success!
