Microsoft has updated the Word and PowerPoint apps on iPad for Office Insiders with support for opening multiple windows of the same app last month. This enables users to concurrently open 2 different documents on iPad. Now, just a few weeks after reaching the hands of Insider users, it seems that non-Insiders are also receiving the update with this feature.

During WWDC 2019, the company showcased enhanced multitasking capabilities. Users on iPadOS 13 or newer can now drag and drop a file from the file list to both sides of the screen to open two documents simultaneously. This is a convenient addition, especially for users who want to compare or reference different documents.
This feature was discovered by Twitter user Nelson EHus. Interestingly, the changelog for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on the App Store mentioned a bug fix update on 11/5 without officially announcing the addition of this feature. Additionally, Excel seems to lack support for the advanced Split View feature at the moment. It's possible that the update enabling the ability to open two documents simultaneously is being rolled out to select users first.
The Redmond giant has brought improved Split View and Slide Over support to the Outlook app on iPadOS earlier this year. The company is also planning to introduce cursor support to its suite of productivity apps later this fall.
