Phu Quoc district was recognized as a type II urban area by the Prime Minister in 2014.
Recently, according to the resolution of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly, starting from January 01, 2021, Phu Quoc City was officially established based on the entire natural area and a population scale of 179,480 people of Phu Quoc district.
After Phu Quoc upgraded to a city, it will include 9 administrative units at commune level: An Thoi Ward, Duong Dong Ward and 7 communes: Duong To, Ham Ninh, Bai Thom, Ganh Dau, Cua Can, Cua Duong, Tho Chu.
In the future, Phu Quoc Island City will prioritize development towards becoming a center for service and eco-tourism with the pioneering international stature of Vietnam.
