Sometimes, you may want to merge or cut images from your favorite photos without the hassle of downloading and installing additional photo editing software. If you're using Windows, you can utilize the default Paint application to edit images. In addition to drawing, resizing, and adding text in Paint, you can swiftly merge and cut images. Explore the detailed guide below.

Check out the comprehensive tutorial on how to merge and cut images using Paint below.
1. Image Merging with Paint
Step 1: Type the keyword Paint in the search box, then select Paint from the search results.

Step 2: Choose File -> Open, in the Open window, locate the first image to merge and click Open to open the image.

Step 3: If you want to merge images horizontally, pay attention to the height dimension. Ensure that the height of the second image to be merged vertically matches the first image for a more aesthetically pleasing result. You can see the image dimensions below the status bar, for example, the height is 480px in the example below.

Next, place the cursor over the right handle of the image, extend the frame to make room for the second image to merge. Adjust the width based on the number of images as desired.

Step 4: Open the second image to merge by right-clicking on the image and selecting Open with -> Paint.

Step 5: If the height dimension of the second image matches the height of the first image, no resizing is needed. If the height differs, choose Resize to adjust the size for the second image.

In the Resize and Skew dialog, select Pixels, then input the size in the Vertical (height) box as 480px to match the height of the first image. Press OK to resize the image.
Step 6: Once the height of the second image matches the first, press Ctrl + A to select the entire image, then right-click on the image and choose Copy.

Step 7: Choose the Paint interface containing the first image, press Ctrl + V to paste the second image. Then, hold the mouse on the pasted image and drag it to the adjacent empty space to merge the images.

You can merge multiple images in a similar manner. If there is excess horizontal space, click the handle button and drag it to fit the last image.

Step 8: Save the Image
Press File -> Save (or Ctrl + S shortcut) to save the merged image onto the original image. If you want to save the merged image as a new file while keeping the original, choose File -> Save As (shortcut F12).

2. Image Cropping with Paint
Step 1: Open the image you want to crop using Paint.
Right-click on the image to be cropped -> Open with -> Paint.

Step 2: You can crop the image using two methods provided by Paint: Rectangular selection and Free-form selection.
Method 1: Crop Image Using Rectangular Selection
In the Home tab, select Select -> Rectangular selection to choose the rectangular selection method.

Next, on the image, press and hold the mouse from the starting point of the area to be cropped and drag it to the desired endpoint. This selected area is now the rectangular region you want to crop. Then, click Crop to cut the image.

This way, you'll obtain the freshly cropped image.

Method 2: Crop Image Using Free-form Selection
Select Home -> Select -> Free-form selection to choose the free-form selection method.

Next, press and hold the mouse from the starting point you want to cut, then draw around the object you want to crop. Afterward, click Crop to cut the image.

The result will look like this:

You can also utilize the handles at the bottom corners or in the middle of the right and bottom edges of the image to crop. Afterward, rotate the image and cut the remaining edges. However, this method is more time-consuming than the ones mentioned above, so knowing the two cropping methods explained in the article should suffice.
Step 3: Save the Image
To save the cropped image, you have two options. Choose File -> Save (Ctrl +S) to overwrite the original image. Select File -> Save As (F12) to save the new image.

Thus, the article has provided detailed guidance on how to merge and crop images using Paint, which is simple and user-friendly. Now, you can merge and crop images effortlessly with the built-in Paint application on Windows, eliminating the need for additional image editing software.
