Student Develops App to Detect ChatGPT Usage for Countering AI-Based Plagiarism

ChatGPT by OpenAI is regarded as a new trend for exchanging dialogues or writing passages using artificial intelligence technology. However, this is also causing educators to worry about the possibility of ChatGPT generating overly polished text, which could lead to easier essay plagiarism. To combat this, a Princeton student stated that they are developing the GPTZero app to verify sentences generated by artificial intelligence.

Edward Tian, recently shared a Twitter video illustrating GPTZero's capabilities. It demonstrated the tool's ability to verify an article from The New York Times as human-written while identifying a Facebook post as AI-generated. GPTZero operates by utilizing scoring mechanisms to assess the complexity of sentence structures and grammar, along with evaluating the likelihood of humans producing such sentences compared to machine-generated text.

Tian's motivation behind developing this software is to counteract academic plagiarism facilitated by technology. Even the developers of ChatGPT express concerns about how their product is being utilized. They are exploring incorporating a feature akin to hidden copyright markings behind ChatGPT-generated text, hoping that this will assist future applications like GPTZero in detecting them during text reviews.
