I'm Luận Luận - a Hue traveler from Viettravelo, In this article, I'd like to share my insights on independent travel and backpacking in Hue. Hopefully, these experiences will help you have a meaningful trip to Hue.
Being born in Hue is what I'm most proud of. I've heard many people say Hue is sad, Hue is solemn, Hue is gentle. Well, they're right. But those are the very things that make Hue so unique, unlike anywhere else. Even, wherever I go, people always say Hue girls are gentle, charming, and intimate. Part of you might not believe that the calmness of Hue has contributed to creating such Hue girls. So, if you're curious about this beloved land of Hue, follow me. Today, I'll be your Hue guide as Tho Dia for a tour around Hue.
Overview of Hue City / Flycame Yamaha Trung Ta
Where is Hue located?
Hue is located 669 kilometers from Hanoi, 1049 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City, and 101 kilometers from Da Nang. As it is situated in the middle of the S-shaped land, you can reach Hue from the North or South by road, rail, or air. There are numerous daily flights, trains, or buses from Hanoi to Hue, and from Saigon to Hue. Alternatively, if you have the means, you can ride a motorbike here.
Here, there is the Perfume River There is Ngu Mountain with Nam Giao Road suspended six high spans Dispassionate, cool shade everywhere Greenness everywhere Mysterious, a strip of royal citadel Open spaces where swallows don't dare to fly away (Nguyen Binh, Some features of Hue)
It can be said that what I like most about Hue is the city's Perfume River flowing through the heart of it. Every night, strolling along the banks of the river or exploring the small streets around, you will feel a very gentle atmosphere.
When is the best time to visit Hue?
There are four seasons every year, but even the people of Hue, like myself, affirm that Hue only has two distinct seasons: the sunny season and the rainy season. Yet, this is the charm, the uniqueness of Hue. And no matter when you visit Hue, you will always find its own allure.
Travelers to Hue, and the locals alike, have some experience with Hue's climate. Hue is often hit by storms and floods due to heavy rain and strong winds. July sees heavy rainfall. In September, there can be continuous rain, or even: 'He's lenient, but she's not, The flood comes on October 23rd.'
The Hue Festival takes place annually in the lunar month of April / image PLM
If you're a festival enthusiast, I suggest visiting Hue around the lunar month of April. This is when the annual Hue Festival takes place (Festival and Craft Village Festival). One thing I'm proud of is that even during festival time, unlike elsewhere, in Hue, you still experience a leisurely pace of life, without being overly expensive or crowded. :D
Every autumn in Hue, the purple crape myrtle stalls compete to bloom beautifully along the streets.
But if you want dazzling photos, local experiences, visit Hue during the sunny months, from January to March, or in the autumn from June to November. During this time, Hue transitions to autumn (though occasional rains still occur), but the weather is very mild, the streets are shaded by purple crape myrtle flowers, making them enchanting.
However, I still prefer Hue's persistent rains over the scorching sun. I think, if people like novelty, good things, and even the specialty of 'Hue rain,' why don't we try experiencing this feeling? Come to Hue this season and see. (In the morning, sit in front of the Imperial City and watch the pouring rain as if slapping people's faces, the feeling is truly different, only in each different perception).
How to travel independently to Hue, transportation options?
Transportation to Hue
By plane: From both the North and the South, you can easily reach Hue by plane. There are daily flights with quite cheap round-trip fares ranging from 1,000,000 to 1,500,000 VND regardless of whether from Noi Bai or Tan Son Nhat airport, neighboring airports usually have even cheaper fares. There are 3 airlines operating regularly: Vietjet, Jetstar, or Vietnam Airlines for you to choose depending on their promotions.
Travel map from Hanoi to Hue by road - air.
Train: Another way to enjoy roadside scenery is by train, but traveling by this means will be very tiring as you can't rest much, and a hard berth ticket is equivalent to 4 soft berth tickets, around 800,000 to 1 million dong. If you take the SE3 train, you'll have to spend about 12 hours on the train (23 hours outbound, arriving at Hue station at 10:45 the next morning), while the SE1 train takes 13 hours (departing at 19:00, arriving at 8:00 the next morning).
The Imperial City of Hue - a beautiful symbol in the eyes of tourists when visiting Hue
For those from the northern region who want to visit Hue, you can take a night train from Hanoi station, which lasts about 13 hours. The train departs at 19:00 and arrives at Hue station around 8:00 to 8:15. The TN train is slow, making several stops at local stations along the way, so it's very tiring and the sleep quality is not good, so I think it's not worth buying.
Bus: This is a cheap and convenient means of transportation, with many bus routes to Hue from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
The earliest bus from Hanoi to Hue departs at 07:00 in the morning. The travel time from Hanoi to Hue by sleeper bus is about 13 - 15 hours depending on the bus company. The average price for a sleeper bus ticket from Hanoi to Hue is around 270,000 VND per ticket. The cheapest ticket from Hanoi to Hue is 250,000 VND per ticket, while the highest price is 280,000 VND per ticket.

What to Eat in Huế?
As the culinary cradle of Vietnam, Huế cuisine often carries a distinct flavor with a wide variety of dishes. Huế food tends to be spicy, so if you're not accustomed to spicy food, you may need to bring your own.
Thổ Địa Huế presents to you a list of delicious dishes to enjoy when visiting Huế.
Rice Clam – Vermicelli Clam – Noodle Clam
The best rice clam/vermicelli clam/noodle clam can only be found in Huế. Rice clam is a rustic dish found everywhere, whether in villages or rural roads, simple yet rich in flavor.
Rice clam is made from cooked white rice left to cool, or boiled vermicelli or noodles. The clam meat is mixed with various condiments, topped with crispy pork fat. Rice clam is also served with a bit of Huế shrimp paste, adding a rich, salty, spicy, and pungent flavor. It's accompanied by fresh vegetables including: raw vegetables, banana flowers, bean sprouts, and thinly sliced taro stems. Roasted peanuts are fried golden and crispy for an appealing color.
Aunt Nho's rice clam eatery always bustling with customers - not just tourists but also locals come to enjoy.
Rice clam dining spots: The best rice clam is on Hen Islet - Vy Da, or Aunt Nho's eatery, located in the alley of Pham Hong Thai Street, at the corner of Truong Dinh - but only open in the morning, by noon it's gone, or else try at 2 Truong Dinh. Rice clam is quite cheap, a bowl costs only about 8,000 - 10,000 VND.
Hue's Various Cakes: Water Fern Cake – Steamed Rice Cake with Shrimp – Tapioca Dumplings

Located on Dao Duy Anh Street, at the end of a small alley with no signboard, there's a banh canh eatery. Operating like a family business with few staff, customers often have to wait a bit long, hence the regulars call it Mrs. Doi's eatery (locals in Hue refer to her as Mrs. Doi). Although the banh canh here is cut flat like in Quang Binh rather than molded into round strands, the broth is distinctly Hue-style.
Rarely does a customer overlook the broth in a bowl of banh canh at Mrs. Doi's eatery.
The broth here has a rich and naturally fragrant shrimp flavor. When the bowl of banh canh is served, the clear broth, pork, and crispy fresh shrimp await. Diners typically add pepper, salt, lime, chili sauce, and finely chopped spring onions already on the table, even though the broth in the bowl is already delicious enough... That's why customers rarely overlook the broth in a bowl of banh canh at Mrs. Doi's eatery. Address: 9 Nguyen Trai and 34 Ngo Gia Tu
