1. Summary of 'The Person in the Bag', Model 1 (Standard)
The work 'The Person in the Bag' by Sê-khốp is a short story reflecting contemporary Russian society with its conservative and backward intellectual classes living in fear, cowardice, and selfishness, making society stifling and gloomy. The story awakens everyone with an urgent perspective: 'Living like this is unsustainable!'
The story begins with a conversation between two friends, Bu-rơ-kin, who tells Doctor I-van about Bê-li-cốp, a peculiar character who has recently become a Greek language teacher. Bê-li-cốp dresses very strangely, always wears rubber boots, carries an umbrella, and wears a thick cotton coat regardless of the weather, all of his belongings are kept in a bag: umbrella, flashy watch, and even a pencil sharpener. And hardly anyone can see Bê-li-cốp's face clearly, because half of his face is hidden by his collar, he wears sunglasses over his eyes, his ears are stuffed with cotton like a sick person, when riding a horse he always pulls up the carriage top no matter how beautiful the weather. At home, he always keeps the door locked with a bolt, sleeps with his head covered in blankets, the room is as sealed as a prison cell. Bê-li-cốp always feels anxious and fearful, he tries to avoid by creating a bizarre 'shell' for himself, only then does he feel safe. Bê-li-cốp always lectures on old-fashioned doctrines, praises the past, things that never existed, he is obsessed with his own world.
Bê-li-cốp's eccentric dressing style is already noticeable, but his peculiar behaviors set him apart from others. For instance, when visiting colleagues, he would sit silently until it was time to leave, considering it a way to 'maintain good relationships with coworkers.' Everyone in the city feared Bê-li-cốp, afraid of being bothered by him, afraid of hearing his preachings and teachings, so no one dared to socialize or do what they wanted. It seemed like things would stay that way, but no, the Va-ren-ca sisters and Cô-va-len-cô appeared. Bê-li-cốp fell in love with one of the sisters but was too scared to confess. However, when he saw them riding bikes in the street, he visited their house and went as far as lecturing and even criticizing them for what he deemed inappropriate behavior. Frustrated by Bê-li-cốp's absurd stubbornness, the younger brother punched him, causing him to fall down the stairs. As the elder sister returned home, she burst into laughter, echoing throughout the house. Bê-li-cốp returned home in shame and humiliation he imagined, then silently ended his life like a farcical play about his eccentricities, a futile death, dying in despair with love he thought would enlighten his life. But here lies the only way out for Bê-li-cốp's life full of deadlock and fear, as well as a wake-up call for people immersed in the backwardness of contemporary society.
