Surge of 4.2 million new COVID-19 cases in November, US pins hopes on vaccine

Top US health officials have announced plans to vaccinate the population against COVID-19 by mid-December, amidst a rapid rise in fatalities over the past 6 months.

Leading advisor of Operation Warp Speed reveals that around 20 million people will be vaccinated against COVID-19 by the end of this year, with a large portion of Americans expected to have access to highly effective vaccines by mid-2021. Moncef Slaoui, overseeing the US vaccine program, states that once authorized, vaccination will commence within 24 to 48 hours, ensuring immediate inoculation for all.

This declaration comes immediately after authorities from all states report a significant surge in COVID-19 cases and deaths, particularly following the Thanksgiving holiday.

The US Department of Transportation also confirms their readiness to facilitate the transportation of large quantities of the COVID-19 vaccine. According to the CDC, the initial recipients will include healthcare workers and long-term care patients, the hardest-hit by the COVID-19 pandemic since the beginning of the year.

According to Slaoui, if the plan for vaccine utilization and administration is approved, approximately 60 to 70 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine will be put into use each month, starting from January 2021.
