The demand for choosing Dalat as a tourist destination and resort during the Lunar New Year is rapidly increasing. It is directly proportional to the number of visitors, resulting in a significant increase in Dalat hotel prices during Tet Lunar New Year 2020. Based on the previous year, 2019 was also a year with many challenging situations, despite being predicted in advance.
Dalat continues to be a captivating destination attracting thousands of visitors during Tet Lunar New Year.
Last year, Mai, who is originally from the Mekong Delta, planned a family trip during Tet for the first time. However, upon arrival, she was shocked because almost all hotels were fully booked. She thought that with the abundance of hotels in tourist areas, if there were no hotels available, there would be homestays. However, everything went beyond her expectations, and her family spent two exhausting hours finding a place to stay. When they finally found one, they were too tired. Mai complained, 'Finding a room for the whole family was a relief, so I didn't have the energy to look for a cheaper place. I didn't expect holiday prices to rise so much compared to my expectations.'
Facing similar challenges to Mai, Hoa from Ho Chi Minh City struggled when his hotel had only one available room. His family of 8 had a hard time finding an ideal hotel for the whole family. However, the chosen hotel was quite far from the city center of Dalat, causing inconvenience in transportation as the family had planned to visit central and nearby locations such as Dalat Market and Xuan Huong Lake.
Similarly, Trang's group of friends spontaneously decided to go to Dalat on the second day of Tet. However, the Homestay with a stunning view they planned to stay at had a significantly higher price, three times the usual rate. With a tight budget, the group of students felt exhausted and decided to choose another homestay with a more affordable price, though slightly higher than their initial budget. Unfortunately, it was not the location they originally wanted.
In a buzzing private group, a member shared, 'I am cautious and have a lot of experience traveling to Dalat, so I booked a hotel a month before Tet on Vntrip to secure a room. Prices doubling or even tripling during Tet is normal, and if you choose to travel during these days, you have to accept it. Booking in advance gives you more options, and I found a hotel that I liked at a reasonable price. I just packed my bags and left.'
Every year, Phung's family chooses Dalat as their destination. She is a customer who prefers booking through e-commerce platforms due to the many accompanying benefits. Typically, she books about a week in advance on a familiar website. However, various amusing and frustrating situations occur. During Tet 2019, the hotel Phung usually stays at was fully booked too early. She decided to choose a newly built, beautiful hotel with an affordable price for a different experience. Unfortunately, upon arrival, she was disappointed because the bedroom was much smaller than in the pictures, and the service quality did not satisfy her.
Dalat features enchanting 'cloud hunting seats,' becoming a hot spot for young people seeking picturesque and magical settings for Instagram-worthy moments.
As predicted, the prices of Dalat hotels during the 2020 Lunar New Year are expected to double or even quadruple, partly due to a slight market increase each year and no declining trend in the tourism industry. Additionally, the growing transformation of this sector attracts many investors to build more hotels, resorts, and innovative homestays equipped with modern facilities. Many unique tourist attractions and photo-worthy locations have emerged this year, drawing a large number of visitors to Dalat. Recently, there have been incidents of crowded photo shoots leading to disputes and conflicts during the holidays, tarnishing the image of tourism and causing controversy on social media. Nevertheless, the allure of this highland region remains undiminished.
The image of two women quarreling over a photo spot in Dalat has sparked outrage.
According to some information from online booking platforms, with less than two weeks until Tet, most travel packages to Dalat, ranging from 3 days 2 nights to 5 days 4 nights, connecting tours from Nha Trang to Dalat, and even distant tours from Hanoi and Danang, are nearly fully booked. Customers opting for only hotels or resorts are also facing a challenging situation to find satisfactory accommodations. Currently, most 4 to 5-star hotels with good deals and convenient locations have been booked about a month in advance. Choices are diminishing, and buyers are encountering sky-high prices, reaching 3 to 4 times the usual rates. Additionally, lower-tier rooms like superior, deluxe, and family rooms with beautiful views at 4 to 5-star hotels are no longer available.
This phenomenon is not hard to understand. Last year, hotels and guesthouses along central streets in Dalat such as Bui Thi Xuan, Ho Tung Mau, Ba Thang Hai Nguyen Chi Thanh, Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, Thu Khoa Huan, Dinh Tien Hoang, Phu Dong Thien Vuong experienced a doubling or even higher increase in room prices. Moreover, most hotels announced full occupancy 3-4 weeks before Tet. Typically, single rooms were around 600-700 thousand VND/night, while double rooms were just under 1 million VND. Premium 4 to 5-star hotels like Dalat Palace, Terracotta, Edensee, SAM, Sammy Dalat, Saigon – Dalat, Mường Thanh Dalat, Dalat Du Parc... were also fully booked, with prices only slightly increasing, ranging from 1.5 to 4 million VND/room/night. Two weeks before Tet, only some hotels located far from the city center still had available rooms, but prices had rapidly doubled compared to normal days.
The popularity of Dalat has never diminished, making hotel reservations more challenging.
The question arises: why do people prepare mentally for a substantial increase in accommodation prices every year, diligently hunt for rooms nearly a month before Tet, yet struggle to find reasonable hotel prices in Dalat during the 2020 Lunar New Year? Partly, it's because the modern trend among Vietnamese people is changing. Instead of choosing to celebrate Tet in their hometown or with family at home, those from distant hometowns decide to celebrate Tet with family through travel. Some online sources suggest that in 2020, some tourists have booked long tours from the 28th to the 3rd day of Lunar New Year, creating difficulties in finding organized tours during this period. Most tours start from the 2nd day of Tet, at the earliest from the 1st day. Consequently, they can only assist with online hotel bookings, and customers have to choose self-guided travel.
Another obstacle is that travel companies have reserved accommodations in advance, making it even more challenging for individual customers to find good room rates. Although they prepared in advance, many people still cannot secure affordable rooms. As we know, when customers buy directly from hotels, they often face higher advertised prices. This is another reason why online booking platforms like Hotdeal, Agoda, Mytour, Ivivu, and Vntrip attract considerable attention. Currently, Vntrip still holds many affordably priced rooms compared to the previous year, providing diverse options for customers.
