Survey Shows Pre-14 Sexual Activity Doubled in 6 Years

These surprising statistics are the outcome of the latest investigation conducted by the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education and Training in collaboration with the World Health Organization and related parties, unveiled yesterday, April 25th, during a workshop announcing the report on the 'Global Student Health Behavior Survey in Vietnam 2019'.

According to WHO, the survey was conducted in 21 provinces with over 7,700 students aged 13 to 17 from 81 schools. The notable data in this report reveals that although the overall rate of sexual activity among students has slightly decreased, the rate of pre-14 sexual activity has doubled, from 1.45% in the first survey in 2013 to 3.51% in the 2019 survey. The initial survey involved 3,465 students from 13 different provinces.

Positive Changes in Student Health Behavior

The rate of bullying among students has significantly decreased, from 22.7% to 6.2%. The number of students smoking has decreased from 5.4% to 2.8% (including e-cigarettes, with an average usage rate of 2.6% nationwide, but significantly higher in major cities at 7.9%). The percentage of children engaging in physical activity for about 60 minutes per day has also increased, from 20% in 2013 to 24.1% in 2019.

Additionally, concerning trends in overweight and obesity have emerged, nearly doubling from 5.8% to 10.6%. This increase is attributed to the rise in fast food consumption, which has increased from 30.2% to 54.1% over the span of a week. There are also concerning mental health statistics, with 13% of children reporting feelings of loneliness most of the time or always. Nearly 7% of them frequently experience anxiety. While there has been a slight decrease in the serious consideration of suicide within the past 12 months, with 1 in 6-7 students having seriously considered it. It's worth noting that these figures were recorded before the pandemic, which led children to stay at home for over a year. During the period of online learning at home, it's expected that these numbers will increase even further.

Purpose of Health Student Survey

According to the Ministry of Health, this survey was conducted to gather evidence to assess the actual situation and risk factors related to behaviors that may predispose individuals to both infectious and non-infectious diseases in this age group. Based on the results, the Ministry of Health will determine policies to prevent non-communicable diseases among the age group of 13 to 17.
