(Homeland) - Makoto Shinkai's latest anime, 'Suzume,' is impressively dominating the global box office charts, marking its name among the most successful anime to date.
Premiered domestically on November 11, 2022, Makoto Shinkai's anime 'Suzume' has been breaking records. Starting its Western conquest in April this year, the film swiftly gained both critical acclaim and box office triumph.
As of now, 'Suzume' stands as one of the all-time highest-grossing anime, with a global box office revenue exceeding $293 million. This achievement propels 'Suzume' to the 4th position in the top 5 anime successes, surpassing 'One Piece Film: Red' ($246.5 million). Despite still screening outside theaters in many places, 'Suzume' faces a tough challenge to climb the ranks further, competing with films like 'Your Name' ($382 million) by Makoto Shinkai, Studio Ghibli's masterpiece 'Spirited Away' ($395 million), and the 2020 surprise hit 'Demon Slayer: Mugen Train' ($507 million).

In the Japanese market as of April 16, 2023, 'Suzume' has grossed a total of ¥14.48 billion, securing the 8th position in anime box office and the 14th position in overall box office history in Japan. Notably, China emerges as the film's most successful international market, earning ¥7.52 billion (equivalent to ¥14.6 billion) in just 25 days since its late last-month release.
'Suzume' achieves a rare feat as one of two anime films with higher box office revenue in China than in Japan, the other being 'Stand By Me Doraemon.' Additionally, Makoto Shinkai's latest film joins the exclusive list of movies earning more internationally than domestically in Japan.
Following 'Your Name' and 'Weathering with You,' 'Suzume' is Makoto Shinkai's third anime. Shinkai revealed that the events of 2011 had a 'life-changing' impact on him, influencing the film genre he wanted to pursue since then. The movie has been screening in Vietnam since March 10, 2023, under the title 'Locked Doors Suzume.'
