The longest Capricorn train in the world in Switzerland consists of 100 carriages, measuring 1,910 meters in length and weighing 2,990 tons.
Switzerland establishes world record with longest Capricorn train
The Capricorn train runs along the Albula route (Switzerland), from Preda station to Thusis, spanning approximately 25 kilometers, in just under an hour. This is the most spectacular route through the Alps between Thusis and St. Moritz.
This route was constructed over 5 years, totaling 62 kilometers in length, with 55 bridges and 39 tunnels, along with winding curves and steep gradients.
In 2008, this railway line was recognized as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Unlike previous records held by Belgium and the Netherlands, the Capricorn train operates on narrow-gauge railways and uses tracks measuring just one meter in size.
“We have lost 30% of our revenue due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Setting this record on the occasion of our 175th anniversary is an opportunity to promote this railway line,” Dr. Renato Fasciati, CEO of RhB, told Euro News. The CEO further explained that installing and controlling the world's longest train is no easy task. “Communication signals must be ensured for all carriages,” Fasciati stated.
To address this issue, a nearly 2km-long field telephone has been installed on the Capricorn train. Additionally, there will be 7 train drivers and 21 technicians working continuously to ensure smooth operations.
