Staircases in traditional feng shui are often overlooked by architects of high-rise buildings in the past. However, with modern architecture today, staircases are receiving more attention because they are important traffic axes that circulate qi, determining good or bad qi to the upper floors.
When arranging staircases, it is necessary to remember the following basic taboos to ensure that the qi that the staircase brings to the floors is good in feng shui terms.
Avoid placing the staircase directly at the center of the house. The center of the house, also known as the central palace, is the heart of the house. This place needs to be calm and ideally empty. A staircase pressing down on the center of the house, making it always active, is not advisable.
Resolve: Move the staircase away from the center of the house. In typical townhouses, staircases are often placed in the middle to divide the front and rear rooms with equal width. If possible, move the staircase so that the center of the house is in the space between the two sides of the staircase.
Taboo: Staircase above the septic tank. The septic tank is always considered the most undesirable place in the house. Almost every factor, every essential space should stay away from this place, and the staircase is no exception. A septic tank under the staircase will bring undesirable qi up to the floors. Even if the feng shui of the upper floors is well arranged, if the initial qi intake has been contaminated, it cannot bring complete good fortune to the house.
Resolve: If the septic tank is currently under the staircase, it needs to be completely drained, filled, and relocated. It is advisable to sprinkle a layer of crushed quartz stones above the old septic tank before tiling to prevent impure qi from rising up the staircase.
Taboo: Dirty bathroom under the staircase. This situation is not uncommon in townhouse architecture. Mostly due to limited space, architects often utilize the space under the stairs to place bathrooms. Under the stairs, the bathroom will have difficulty meeting ventilation requirements, leading to a place that harbors many bacteria. Therefore, placing a bathroom under the stairs still has some negative impacts.
Resolve: Always maintain the habit of keeping the bathroom clean. If there is a skylight next to the bathroom, it is extremely good, so make use of it for direct ventilation. Additionally, install an exhaust fan to help the area become more ventilated and dry. When the bathroom under the stairs is not dirty, not damp, not musty, then the negative impact of feng shui will be minimal, not worth worrying about.
Taboo: Staircase placed near and directly facing the bathroom door. Unfavorable qi from the bathroom can easily flow out the door and up the stairs, leading to the upper floors.
Resolve: Similar to the taboo of having a bathroom under the stairs, to resolve the issue of the staircase directly facing the bathroom door, the bathroom must be kept clean. For added peace of mind, you can install an automatic closing hinge to ensure the bathroom door is always closed when not in use.
Taboo: Staircase placed near and directly facing the bedroom door. The qi field in the bedroom can easily be disturbed, causing the occupant to be moody or unsettled, if this happens.
Resolve: Always close the bedroom door when entering the room.
Taboo: Staircase placed near and directly facing the main door. The qi at the foot of the staircase, if placed close to the main door, will be dispersed outward, which is not good because the staircase needs to gather qi. However, if the staircase faces the main door, receives good qi from the main door direction, and has an appropriate distance from the main door, it is still good because the staircase receives good qi going up to the upper floors. Only when the staircase faces the main door and the direction of the door is bad, then this should be avoided.
Resolve: In case of a bad situation, it is necessary to build a separating wall or create a decorative partition, place a shelf, or place a plant at the foot of the staircase to prevent qi from leaking out of the house and to block bad qi from going up the staircase. Changing the approach direction to the staircase by rearranging the first few steps is also a commonly used method.
Taboo: Staircase directly facing the altar, or the altar located under the stairs. The altar space always needs quietness and solemnity. A staircase directly facing the altar will make this place frequently active, losing the necessary tranquility. There will always be people moving above, if the altar is located under the stairs, this is definitely not good in spiritual culture.
Resolve: Relocate the altar to another location.
Taboo: Staircase directly facing the bed, or bed located under the stairs. Similar to a staircase directly facing the altar, or the altar located under the stairs. The bed is also a place that needs quietness, it will be very uncomfortable when someone walks above or passes by right next to the bed.
Resolve: Move the bed to another location.
Taboo: Staircase directly facing the kitchen or kitchen located under the stairs. The fiery energy of the kitchen, the smell of food will spread throughout the house if this situation occurs.
Resolve: Change the kitchen to a different location.
