Spanning across Vinh Phuc, Tuyen Quang, and Thai Nguyen provinces, covering nearly 35,000 hectares, Tam Dao National Park is a haven for hundreds of animal species amidst lush vegetation, creating a picturesque landscape.
Tam Dao National Park – Nature's Treasure in Vinh Phuc Province's Mountains
Tam Dao National Park lies entirely within the Tam Dao mountain range, with peaks reaching heights of 1,000 meters above sea level. The terrain here features sharp peaks, steep slopes, and deep, rugged valleys.

The national park encompasses four main soil types: ferralitic soil with yellow humus growing on acidic magma rocks; ferralitic soil with red-yellow humus found on low mountains, developing on crystalline magma rocks; red-yellow ferralitic soil growing on various types of rocks; and slope soil and alluvium at elevations below 100 meters.

The Tam Dao mountain range experiences varying annual rainfall, contributing to the creation of microclimates. All of these factors combine to create a national park blanketed with dense vegetation, multiple layers, and a diverse range of biological communities and ecosystems.

This area comprises 26,163 hectares of predominantly lush evergreen rainforest, covering 70% of the land. Additionally, the park hosts dense tropical evergreen rainforest, mountainous dwarf forests, bamboo forests, post-logging recovery forests, planted forests, shrublands, and grasslands.

Tam Dao National Park is documented to harbor an impressive 1,282 plant species belonging to 660 genera in 179 higher plant families. Among them are representative species from the subtropical region. Notable among them are 42 endemic species and 64 rare species, including the Tam Dao goldenrod, long-flowered camellia, golden camellia, primrose, creeping lily, and golden larch.

This location is also home to 163 animal species across 158 families in 39 orders, spanning five classes: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects. The park hosts an impressive 239 bird species, including stunning varieties like the crested argus, white pheasant, red pheasant, and ruby-throated sunbird. Rare species include the silver pheasant and white-winged pheasant. Additionally, there are 64 valuable mammal species, including flying squirrels, clouded leopards, tigers, bears, civets, gibbons, and black-shanked doucs.

Of particular note are the 39 endemic animal species, including 11 narrowly endemic species such as Angel's keelback snake (Amphiesma angeli), multi-temperature racer snake (Boiga multitempolaris), and Deloustal's newt (Paramerotriton deloustali), along with 8 other insect species.

Within the premises of Tam Dao National Park lies a bear rescue center, housing and conserving over 100 bear specimens. Spanning 12 hectares, the bear rescue center currently cares for Asiatic black bears and Malayan sun bears. Visitors are advised to refrain from making loud noises, calling or feeding the bears, as it can lead to danger.

The center features 30,000 square meters of natural, wilderness-like outdoor enclosures designed to stimulate natural behaviors in bears. The center only opens to visitors two days a month, so contacting ahead is essential to avoid missing the schedule.

Additionally, there is an exhibition room showcasing specimens of the unique flora and fauna of Tam Dao National Park. This is definitely a must-visit spot for those passionate about exploring the natural world.
