- Wrap the incense bowl with a clean cloth and pour new ash or sand into it, filling 2/3 of the bowl to securely hold the incense and prevent it from falling messily. Then, place the incense bowl back in its original position.
- When pouring ash or sand into the incense bowl, insert the incense sticks in odd numbers. Remember to group the incense sticks together.
- If you prefer not to replace the ash or sand, use a spoon to remove some to ensure that the ash or sand only occupies 2/3 of the bowl.
- Clean and wipe the altar reverently before placing the incense bowl back in position.

If you use a brass incense bowl, do not wash it with water as it will cause green mold to appear. Instead, clean it with a damp cloth and then dry it. As for porcelain incense bowls, you need to clean them carefully to avoid breakage.
