Indulge in the goodness of plums and peaches in Sa Pa, Mộc Châu, and Bắc Hà, ripening from April to May, delighting consumers across the country.
Tempting Northwest Fruit Season
Red Plums of Sa Pa
About 2 months after the white plum blossom season in Tả Van village (Sa Pa, Lào Cai), the giant red plums start weighing down the trees. These plums are large, juicy, with a thick pulp and small seeds. The skin is vibrant red on the tree, turning dark crimson when ripe, offering a sweet and rich taste. Due to their exquisite flavor, these plums are sold at a relatively high price, around 100,000 VND per kg.
Triple-Blossom Plums of Bắc Hà
Bắc Hà, situated around 100km from Tả Van in Lào Cai province, is renowned as the kingdom of triple-blossom plums. This plum variety, known as triple-blossom, features three layers: a white powdery coating on the outer skin, a skin transitioning from green to purple-red when ripe, and a vibrant red inner flesh. The round, taut fruit with crisp, slightly tart flesh characterizes this unique plum.
Sa Pa Peaches
The peach season in Sa Pa kicks off from early May to mid-June. Also referred to as tea cup peaches due to their pointed tails, these peaches are smaller than a tea cup, covered in fine fuzz on the skin. Despite their size, they are crispy, fragrant, and mildly tart. Locals often load ripe peaches onto bamboo trays to sell along the national highway. For those wanting to pick them in the orchard, a visit to Tả Phìn village, obtaining permission from a local, and paying around 50,000 VND per kg for the harvested peaches is the way to go.
Mộc Châu Peaches
Peaches from the Northwest are also famous in Mộc Châu (Sơn La). After the vibrant pink peach blossom season of 2-3 months, golden-red peaches start to ripen. The French variety peaches here have smooth, plum-like skin or fuzzy covering, but all are crispy, sweet, and mildly sour. In May, these peaches are abundantly sold along National Route 6 in Mộc Châu at an affordable price, around 20,000 VND per kg.
Mộc Châu Late Plums
Moc Chau is renowned as the largest plum paradise in the country, with plum harvesting starting from early May. The prevalent variety here is medium-sized, with a slightly greenish and not entirely red skin, crisp and juicy flesh, and tiny seeds. The area bordering Tan Lap commune and Moc Chau town, especially Nà Ka valley, is where numerous plum orchards allow tourists to self-pick and buy directly. The service fee for plum picking is approximately 20,000 VND per person, and visitors can enjoy free tasting in the orchard. If purchased, the price is around 40,000 – 60,000 VND per kilogram.
