The Initial Steps of Entrepreneurship
In recent years, unique countryside-style eateries/restaurants have begun to rise in popularity. Notable restaurants following the countryside style with rustic delicacies include: Ao Quan, Luong Son Quan, Countryside Restaurant, etc.
To achieve success like today, surely the owners of these fine dining establishments in Hanoi all have their own entrepreneurial stories. Today, Pasgo would like to share with you the arduous entrepreneurial journey of Mr. Vu Ngoc Thuan - the billionaire owner of Ao Quan Restaurant at 19 Dong Tac.

Mr. Thuan is personally preparing traditional dishes for diners.
Post-2011, despite the real estate market downturn, Vu Ngoc Thuan managed to pocket 2 billion VND after over three years of hard work in the field. At that time, real estate brokerage was no longer his passion, and the idea of starting a business began to spark within him.
Lacking any business experience, Vu Ngoc Thuan failed right from the start. Losing over 100 million VND in capital for his first entrepreneurial venture, but that served as a foundation for future successes.

Thanks to his failed business startups, he established a popular restaurant in Hanoi - named Ao Quan.
On his second attempt at entrepreneurship, he continued to face failure. Vu Ngoc Thuan opened a breakfast noodle soup eatery, but due to the inability to calculate the daily cash flow accurately, the noodle shop inevitably went out of business.
Venturing into business once again, this time he opened a beer pub. Beer drinkers tended to spend more generously than noodle soup patrons. To tighten financial management, Vu Ngoc Thuan installed a computer system right after opening the pub. After numerous failed business startups, he began to turn a profit.
While on the verge of profitability, six months later, the landlord reclaimed the premises. Due to oversight in drafting the lease contract, the closure of the beer pub was unforeseen. Once again, he faced failure.
With the initial capital of 2 billion VND, he lost over 1 billion VND after several failed business startup attempts. Fortune favored him in 2013 when he and his friends opened three large beef noodle soup restaurants on two major streets: Hoang Quoc Viet and Thai Phien.
Drawing from considerable experience after numerous failed business startups, the three beef noodle soup restaurants consistently brought in 200 million VND per month.
Success came after the failed business startup attempts
His most significant breakthrough was in 2014. A true Northern countryside-style restaurant in Hanoi at that time, named Ao Quan, brought in billions. Many restaurants followed the countryside model but fell short, so he was determined to stand out to succeed.

All the plants and flowers decorating Ao Quan are real.
Every day, he spends nearly 2 million VND to buy fresh flowers to sprinkle around the paths, water surfaces, and tables. Banana trees, reed plants, all personally sourced by Vu Ngoc Thuan from his hometown and brought to Ao Quan in Hanoi.

Stepping onto the wooden bridge leads to the rustic space of Ao Quan, brimming with natural ambiance.
Inside Ao Quan, he even hired someone to dig ponds, create realistic waterfalls, thatch the roof with leaves, and bought traditional wooden tables and ceramic bowls to vividly recreate the Northern countryside imagery.

Ao Quan is praised by many diners as the best drinking spot in Hanoi.

Not only regular drinkers, but many couples also choose this place as their dating spot.
Being a countryside-style restaurant, it naturally serves delicious rustic dishes. From grilled chicken, oxtail soup, crispy fried eel, crispy fried frog legs, salt-grilled field frog, boiled and grilled goat meat, etc.
Ao Quan is also regarded as a top-notch drinking spot in Hanoi. The selected liquors must have clear origins, with a strong and authentic taste like rice wine with wild flowers, banana flower wine, cat apple wine, etc.

Authentic Northern dishes at Ao Quan

The total income from all four restaurants combined now brings in approximately 5 billion VND annually. With experiences from both failed and successful business startups, he is already contemplating expanding business models like Ao Quan.
