On August 12th, in Rach Gia City (Kien Giang Province), the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment conferred the ASEAN Heritage Site certification upon U Minh Thượng National Park in Kien Giang Province.
Within the melaleuca forest ecosystem of the Mekong Delta, only the core area of U Minh Thượng National Park exhibits characteristics of pristine primeval forests.

These are the unique associations of mixed melaleuca and peat swamp forests, covering an area of nearly 3,000 hectares. Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Bui Cach Tuyen urged the Kiên Giang Provincial People's Committee to promptly develop a nomination dossier for Ramsar site designation (internationally important wetland areas) for U Minh Thượng National Park.
