If you've ever been enchanted by the rows of ban flowers in February, the streets covered in white milk flower petals like March snow, surely you'll also be mesmerized by the romantic beauty of the July flower - bougainvillea. Every summer, during the hottest and most scorching days, the scent of bougainvillea fills the air with a gentle fragrance. The delicate, lush petals of bougainvillea gracefully curl around the stamens. Bougainvillea blooms in clusters at the tips of branches, forming dense, vibrant branches of pink flowers as summer arrives. As soon as other flowers fade and blend into the green of the leaves, it's time for bougainvillea to showcase its sweet beauty. Each year, there's only one season of bougainvillea blossoms, and everyone eagerly anticipates it.
A glimpse into bougainvillea flowers
As a flower species originating from East Asia, bougainvillea, also known as tu vi or hundred days red, has over 40 different varieties with various colors like red, yellow, white, and purple. However, in Vietnam, the most commonly planted bougainvillea is the pink variety. The bougainvillea plant has a small woody stem, with branches sprawling in all directions, adorned with thorns, and leaves arranged in a tuft. The plant tends to grow taller than average, so the gardeners carefully prune and shape the plants to showcase the blossoms at eye level for visitors to enjoy and capture in photographs.

The flourishing pink bougainvillea blooms vividly. As the petals fade, the pink hue softens. The vibrant pink color under the sunlight creates a poetic and romantic scene along Hanoi's bougainvillea street, with sweet and tender landscapes. Every year, there's a bougainvillea blossom season in late June, reaching its peak in July. The soft, radiant pink flowers weave bright pink patches on the backdrop of lush green leaves.
This flower is also intertwined with a legend about a beautiful princess named Tuong Vi, destined for tragic fate. Tuong Vi possessed unparalleled beauty, but according to an old man's prophecy, she would face many misfortunes. To avoid the predicted doom, the king hid her in a remote mountain pass. However, rumors of her beauty spread far and wide. Unfortunately, she fell seriously ill. Only the leaves of a white flower growing on a mountain peak between two abysses and a waterfall could save her. The king decreed that whoever found this flower would marry the princess. No one found the flower except a poor peasant. The young man appeared with the flower, and Tuong Vi and the peasant became husband and wife. However, not long after, the peasant had to go to war. Every day, the birds maintained communication between the two. Until one evening, Tuong Vi kept looking but received no sign from her husband. Knowing that her husband had sacrificed himself, she threw herself into the waterfall. There, the white flower from the past was discovered – the bougainvillea.
