'Blue Beetle' is seen as the game-changer for the DC superhero universe. While the plot isn't new, its entertainment value has won over audiences.
Following The Flash, Blue Beetle marks the 14th installment and one of the final projects concluding the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), introducing a superhero never seen before.
This move is seen as a bold direction by James Gunn, the chairman of DC Studios, as the studio embarks on creating an entirely new cinematic universe.
The 'Blue Beetle' superhero
The protagonist, Jaime Reyes (played by Xolo Maridueña), is a 22-year-old who unexpectedly gains superpowers from an alien entity known as Scarab, resembling a blue beetle. This entity becomes a parasitic but protective talisman for him.
Whenever Jamie faces danger, Scarab autonomously configures a special armor around him, turning Jamie into the invincible superhero Blue Beetle, equipped with state-of-the-art weaponry.

The storyline follows a safe, familiar motif where the protagonist accidentally gains superpowers from a celestial gift. Initially, Jamie struggles to control Scarab's power, but gradually masters the advanced weaponry.
With a family-friendly comedic style reminiscent of Shazam! (2019), the film weaves in numerous humorous situations and dialogues, enhancing its entertainment value. The script is straightforward and accessible, even for those unfamiliar with the comic books.
Besides the battles of Blue Beetle, the film delves into the personal life of Jaime Reyes. As a young man, he grapples with life's challenges, struggling to find employment.
His family also faces a crisis due to bankruptcy, but each member supports one another in all aspects. Their optimism and cheerfulness serve as a significant source of motivation for Jaime.
The integration of Latin culture adds a unique touch, differentiating it from other superhero films. Through its narrative, the filmmakers convey messages about family and the strength of kinship. This concept, while not new, is effectively and sensibly applied.
Well-rounded but lacks innovation
For fans, Blue Beetle is pivotal as it concludes the DCEU while simultaneously launching a new universe, completely altering DC's destiny.
The film features numerous references to other superheroes to establish connections. However, these references are minor and do not significantly impact the main storyline.

Previous DC projects like The Flash and Shazam! Fury of the Gods failed at the box office despite having star-studded casts and familiar characters. This time, the studio took a different approach by choosing a relatively unknown superhero and a less famous cast.
Xolo Maridueña, known for his role in Cobra Kai, takes the lead. His performance is characterized by a natural, unforced acting style.
Speaking to Variety, Maridueña expressed pride in being the first DC superhero of Latin origin. This marks a significant milestone in the career of the actor born in 2002, setting him up as a future star.
Alongside Xolo Maridueña, the supporting cast fits their roles well, lending credibility to the narrative.
At the helm is Ángel Manuel Soto, a relatively unknown name in Hollywood. However, the Puerto Rican director ensures meticulous execution, delivering a well-rounded film from start to finish.
Visual effects stand out, captivating audiences. Jaime's transformation into Blue Beetle is reminiscent of Iron Man suiting up or the transformations seen in the Kamen Rider series.

The diversity in the character's arsenal keeps the film engaging. Jaime alternates between swords and shields, uses satellites for communication, and employs energy cannons or giant blades as needed.
Notably, Blue Beetle's armor can generate wings for flight and act as a protective shield. The armor adapts its form to enhance the character's strength in various situations.
The biggest critique of Blue Beetle is its adherence to the superhero genre's clichés. The familiar narrative of good overcoming evil results in a predictable and less thrilling conclusion. The antagonist lacks depth, leaving little impact.
Despite its formulaic approach, the film still garnered relatively positive responses upon release, securing a “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes with 76% from critics and a 92% audience approval rate.
In Vietnam, Blue Beetle quickly captured attention. According to Box Office Vietnam, the movie ranked second in the box office charts for the week, trailing only behind the blockbuster Oppenheimer.
Overall, Blue Beetle may not break new ground in terms of concept or story. However, the natural performances and the director's earnest efforts have endeared the film to audiences.
