The new Shift Change could completely alter the familiar gameplay of League of Legends, especially in the professional arena.
As known in the 2022 season, changes to the Shift ability are one of the biggest and most impactful changes to League of Legends gameplay. Specifically, the new Shift ability prevents players from 'teleporting' to wards or minions until after 14 minutes. So, how will this change affect League of Legends gameplay?
Top Lane
Now, top lane players and professionals will have to deal with two critical issues. Firstly, controlling minion waves. Previously, top lane players would apply pressure by pushing minion waves, backing to buy items and regenerate health/mana, then 'teleporting' back to the last surviving minion unit to maintain the push. When minion waves are continuously pushed to the tower, it not only puts opponents at a disadvantage in terms of minion stats but also creates opportunities for successful tower dives when other lanes come to gank. This, coupled with strong top lane champions (such as Irelia, Camille...) and specific items, has established a consistent top lane dominance throughout many past seasons of League of Legends.

With the New Shift, top lane players will find it harder to control minion waves as they please. However, for those on the losing side of the lane, this will limit constant aggressive wave pushing and provide players with a safe retreat when needed. Even if minion waves are pushed close to the tower, players won't fear being 'gang-up' in the early lane phase as no one can 'teleport' directly onto minions or wards anymore.
Secondly, many believe this will disconnect Top Lane from other lanes, but in reality, playing a 2-lane push strategy always requires players to both pressure opponents and keep their lane safe. Therefore, winning or losing the lane now demands players, especially professionals, to rely more on their own abilities, at least until the 15-minute mark of the match.

Mid Lane
This will be the position least affected by the latest Shift Change among the 3 lanes. In fact, the distance from mid lane fountain to the first tower is much shorter compared to the top lane. Moreover, mid laners often tend to shift straight to the tower, ensuring both safety and maintaining minion waves. And in gank situations, mid lanes usually move normally, or with some champions like Twisted Fate or Ryze, they'll use their abilities, which won't be affected by the new Shift.
In some recent metas, midlaners often have to control minion waves, farm, and keep opponents in check. Therefore, the new Shift fundamentally doesn't make mid lanes stronger or weaker at all.

Bot Lane
This lane benefits the most from the recent Shift Change. Specifically, Marksmen and Supports used to worry about being caught in tricky situations when junglers ganked or placed wards near the Dragon Pit. With this new change, the Marksmen won't be caught off guard when they push forward and suddenly encounter opponents playing defensively.
Furthermore, this change will help gameplay centered around Marksmen to come back even stronger. Despite the presence of powerhouse Marksmen like Aphelios or popular picks like Jhin, teams often prioritize the top lane, relieving pressure on Marksmen. However, with other lanes unable to cover the bottom lane early in the game, Marksmen players can feel more secure. And champions with strong lane presence or fast minion-clearing abilities like Draven, Caitlyn will become even stronger.

Another reason could be that early 'gang-up' situations previously led to matches ending faster than expected. Riot doesn't want this, and the Shift Change is one of the factors that will help matches last longer.
