The latest official update for Windows 7 and 8 is here, introducing support for secure boot

Through the Extended Security Update program (ESU), the final update for both Windows 7 and 8 has been released. In this update, as discovered by the China Software Development Network blog, Microsoft has added support for secure boot through UEFI Secure Boot. However, there are currently some issues with this support.

Secure boot was first supported by Microsoft on the Windows 8 operating system. It seems that supporting organizations and businesses sticking with Windows 7 for booting computers in the system through secure boot, this feature doesn't work flawlessly on every device.

The latest patch fails to update the VGA.sys and VGApnp.sys graphics driver, resulting in numerous users encountering issues with secure boot activation on Win 7. Many find themselves stuck at the Windows boot screen with the logo. Since systems supporting UEFI Class 3 security boot don't allow running in Legacy Mode or Compatibility Support Module, Microsoft's recently updated solution requires a bit of tinkering to function effectively.

The latest updates for Win 7 and 8 address several issues related to applications and software using the sqlsrv32.dll driver (Microsoft Open Database Connectivity SQL Server). However, Microsoft has yet to resolve some lingering issues at their core.

On the personal user front, Windows 7 halted its update journey in 2015, and Windows 8 bid farewell in 2018. The extended support service for Windows 7 also ceased operations in 2020. Nevertheless, Microsoft continues to deploy ESU services for its partners, ensuring crucial security patches for machines that are either reluctant or unable to upgrade to newer Windows versions due to system stability concerns. With the final ESU update, Microsoft officially concludes the extended support era for Windows 7 and 8 this week.

Currently, around 11% of the world's Windows-powered computers still run on Windows 7, with Windows 11 claiming only a 16% share. From now until January 2025, the exclusive route for security updates on Windows 7 will be through micropatches delivered by the 0patch programming group.

Debuting in 2009, Windows 7 stood out as one of Microsoft's most popular OS versions, thanks to its stability. Windows 8, introduced three years later, garnered mixed reactions due to significant changes in the system interface. Most current Windows PC users stick with Windows 10 for reasons similar to those of Windows 7, while version 11 is yet to achieve the coverage Microsoft aspires for.
