This is the name initially chosen by the Titanic director.
Despite being released over 25 years ago, Titanic remains a towering monument of Hollywood cinema. The film was a massive commercial and critical success, being the first blockbuster to gross over $1 billion worldwide. Contributing to the 'Titanic' phenomenon were the iconic duo of Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. However, this legendary pair almost didn't happen if this actor had taken on the role of Jack instead of DiCaprio.

According to Screen Rant, there were several actors vying for the role of Jack Dawson, but fate had other plans for Titanic. One such case was River Phoenix. During the conceptualization of the film, director James Cameron always imagined and believed that River Phoenix was the embodiment of Jack Dawson.

River Phoenix was one of the most highly regarded actors of Hollywood's X generation (actors born in the 1970s). He was the older brother of Joaquin Phoenix, the actor who portrayed the Joker and won an Oscar in recent years. Throughout his career, River Phoenix captivated audiences with his handsome appearance, charisma, and exceptional acting. Some notable films he appeared in include Stand by Me, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,...
He was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor and won numerous other prestigious acting awards. It's fair to say that in the 1990s, River Phoenix was the most sought-after and adored actor.

Despite James Cameron's unwavering faith in Titanic, unfortunately, River Phoenix passed away in 1993 while still filming his final movie Dark Blood. This heartbreaking event occurred before Titanic went into production, so James Cameron had to select another actor for the role of Jack. That's when Leonardo DiCaprio (then just 23 years old) was chosen and sparked a frenzy that continues to this day.
