Back in the day, whenever my sisters and I wanted a snack, mom would gather around the fire at the backyard and boil some corn. I still remember it took quite a while for the corn to be ready. Holding the corn and blowing on it, we enjoyed our treat. As I grew older, when the corn cravings hit, I usually bought pre-boiled corn from the vendors outside the market.
However, there was always a lingering fear of not knowing if the sellers used chemical sugar to boil the corn. So, from then on, I experimented with boiling corn at home. Initially, I boiled it on a gas stove, but this method forced me to stand there, watching the stove. Clean the corn, let it drain. Then, add salt and sugar to the pot. I usually use rock salt and brown sugar to make the corn more flavorful after boiling. Next, arrange the corn in the pot; an average pot can boil about 3 to 4 corns. Finally, pour water to cover the corn, let it sit for a while for the sugar and salt to dissolve in water, then cover the lid, press the 'cook' button.
With this method, it only takes 45 minutes for the corn to be cooked without the hassle of standing by the stove like when boiling corn on a gas stove.
