The colossal and tranquil Buddha statue at Chaukhtatgyi Temple, Myanmar
Chaukhtatgyi Temple is regarded as the most renowned Buddhist temple in Bahan town, Yangon, Myanmar. Constructed in 1907, it stands nearly as tall as a 6-story building. Here, the longest reclining Buddha statue in the world is preserved against a wall. Inside Chaukhtatgyi Temple, numerous stone tablets are inscribed with teachings of Buddha and the history of Buddhism in both Burmese and English.

Having endured nearly 1600 years, Chaukhtatgyi Temple still retains its architectural charm after several renovation phases, with all construction costs funded by the local community.

Here, visitors can behold many rare and precious artifacts of the four great Buddhas: the robe of Buddha Kassapa, the alms bowl of Buddha Konagamana, eight strands of hair of Buddha Gautama, and the staff of Buddha Kakusandha.

The special feature of the main temple is the Buddha statue sculpted in 1966, measuring 65m in length and 30m in height. By 1907, the statue was completed. It is currently the largest Buddha statue in Myanmar. The head of the Buddha statue faces East, while the face looks towards the South. The facial expression of the Buddha statue is very serene, adorned with a crown encrusted with diamonds and gemstones. The pure image, the compassion of the Buddha, dispels all worries and troubles of the faithful and visitors when they come to visit.

The face of the Buddha statue is very soulful and lively, reflecting compassion and kindness. Surely, during the sculpting process, the ancient artisans instilled a lot of faith into it. So that thousands of years later, when the faithful come on pilgrimage, they still see Him with a beauty that moves the heart.

*Things to note when visiting the temple:
– Dress modestly and respectfully, avoid wearing overly revealing clothes when entering the temple. You can also try traditional Myanmar clothing to easily enter the temple and take beautiful photos here.
