Mr. Do Minh Phu, the chairman of Doji Gemstone Group and owner of three of the most renowned restaurants in Hanoi, including Ngoc Mai Red. Initially a scientific researcher, he serendipitously ventured into the business world.
You might be familiar with the name of the largest gemstone group in Vietnam – Doji, but you may not know the man behind it. None other than Mr. Do Minh Phu, holding 100% of the shares in the Doji Group. His serendipitous connection with gemstones is something he could never have anticipated.
Serendipity with Precious Gemstones
Born in 1952 and originally from Yen Binh, Yen Bai province, he graduated from high school with excellent academic achievements. Due to an administrative error, his name was omitted from the enrollment letter when he was sent to study in the Soviet Union. In order to rectify the mistake and compensate for the outstanding student, the Minister of Higher Education and Vocational Training at that time, Mr. Ta Quang Buu, allowed him to choose any department at Hanoi University of Technology to study.

During Mr. Phu's time, Hanoi University of Technology was one of the largest universities in the capital and the country. He chose the highest-scoring department – electronic engineering. After graduation, Mr. Phu worked in the computer science field for an extended period.
Furthermore, with his excellent expertise and fluent English, he was appointed as the director of a foreign gemstone company by the Research Institute. Later, he joined a joint venture company in the same field. In 1994, he resigned from the position of Director in that joint venture company, with a salary of up to $3000 US dollars, to establish his own gemstone company.
In 2007, he initiated the construction of the first gemstone-focused shopping center in Vietnam, located in Hanoi, named Ruby Plaza. Born into a family with a business tradition, Mr. Phu undoubtedly possessed a business-minded perspective beyond the ordinary.
A restaurant blending gemstones and flowers: Red Jade Pearl
Utilizing the top floors, 16th and 17th, of the commercial center, he opened three restaurants with different culinary concepts. This not only minimized rental costs but also efficiently marketed the gemstone stalls below, simultaneously generating revenue.
Among the three mentioned restaurants, Red Jade Pearl stands out. Inspired by radiant red rubies – directly related to his business – and the delicate apricot blossoms, a flower Mr. Phu holds dear. A prominent relief sculpture of a red apricot blossom tree graces the interior of the restaurant.

Subtle earthy tones are cleverly combined with vivid red hues to avoid monotony. The bright caramel brown helps moderate the brilliance and warmth of the red. Mr. Phu and the architect had to conduct extensive research to find a color that not only softened the intensity of red but also accentuated sophistication.
