1. History of the Establishment of the March 26 Youth Union
On March 20-26, 1931, during the 2nd Central Committee Party Executive Committee Meeting, the Party Central Committee secured a crucial position in the agenda to discuss youth work. The decision made was of immense significance, stating that Party committees from central to local levels must promptly appoint members to oversee Youth Union affairs.
In our country, there are numerous Youth Union organizations with approximately 1,500 members, forming local Youth Union branches from communes and districts to grassroots levels. With the strength of the Youth Union, it timely met the demands of our youth movement, engaging in objective activities aligned with our country's revolution and reflecting the immense contributions of the Party and Uncle Ho.
On March 22-25, 1961, the Central Committee of the Vietnamese Youth Union and the 3rd National Congress convened, deciding to commemorate March 25, 1931, as the day of the Youth Union's establishment.
Since March 26, 1931, to adapt to the demands of each revolutionary period, the Youth Union has undergone several name changes:
- From 3/26/1931 - 3/26/1936: The Youth Union was named the Communist Youth Union of Indochina.
- From 1937 - 1939: The Youth Union was named the Democratic Youth Union of Indochina.
- From 11/1939 - 11/1941: The Youth Union was named the Anti-Colonial Youth Union of Indochina.
- From 5/1941 - 1956: The Youth Union was named the National Salvation Youth Union of Vietnam.
- From 10/25/1956 - 1970: The Youth Union was named the Vietnamese Youth Labor Union.
- From 2/1970 - 11/1976: The Youth Union was named the Ho Chi Minh Youth Labor Union.
- From 12/1976 until now: The Youth Union is named the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union.
2. Significance of the Establishment Day March 26th
At the end of March 1931, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Indochina organized the second plenary session in Saigon, chaired by General Secretary Tran Phu. The conference outlined urgent tasks, emphasizing the need to increase the working-class composition within the Party. Recognizing the vital role of the youth in the revolutionary cause, a decision was made to 'urgently organize the Communist Youth Union' and directives were issued to Party organizations at concerned localities to focus on building the Youth Union. Thus, the Youth Union was established, has endured, and continues to develop to this day.
