Hà Tiên was officially recognized as a city in Kiên Giang province in early November 2018. Over the next two years, it is expected to welcome over 3 million tourists, generating revenue of 2,700 billion VND.
The Charm of Kiên Giang's Two-Month-Old City
The town of Hà Tiên (established in 1998, separated from the old Hà Tiên district) was officially recognized as a city in Kiên Giang province on November 3, 2018. The city includes the wards of Đông Hồ, Tô Châu, Pháo Đài, Bình San, and the communes of Mỹ Đức, Thuận Yên, Tiên Hải. Hà Tiên City is part of the key economic region in the Mekong Delta.
In 1998, the average income per capita here was only about 4.6 million VND/person/year. By the end of 2017, this number reached nearly 69 million VND; the economic structure shifted towards strong development in trade, services, and tourism. In the first 9 months of 2018, the number of visitors to Hà Tiên reached over 2.2 million (including 24,567 international visitors), a 25.55% increase compared to the same period in 2017, achieving 87.52% of the plan. The total revenue from tourism services exceeded 1,200 billion VND.
By 2020, Hà Tiên is expected to welcome over 3 million visitors, with revenue reaching around 2,700 billion VND. According to the resolution, the Standing Committee of the National Assembly agreed to establish Hà Tiên City based on the entire 16.96 km² natural area and 81,576 people of the former town of Hà Tiên. Administrative boundaries of Hà Tiên City: East borders Giang Thành district, west borders the Gulf of Thailand, south borders Kiên Lương district (Kiên Giang province), and north borders the Kingdom of Cambodia.
