Sets feature enables grouping of applications in a single working window using tabs within a single window.
The Start command in Windows opens applications in a new tab within the Command Prompt window
With Sets, when launching a program using the Start command in Command Prompt, (refer to how to open CMD here), the supported application will start opening a new tab in the Command Prompt window instead of a dedicated window for the application.
For users who want to open applications using the Start command to open the application in a dedicated window, Microsoft also adds the '/newwindow' parameter to the Start command in Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17677.
From now on, if you want to open a new application in a dedicated window from Command Prompt on Windows 10, you can use the '/newwindow' parameter as shown in the example below:
start /newwindow notepad
The command above will open Notepad in a new window rather than a new tab in the Command Prompt window.
However, not all Sets-supported applications will start correctly with this parameter. For example, the command 'tart /newwindow microsoft-edge:' to open the Edge browser in a new window, but this command will return an error 'The system cannot execute the specified program'.
In CMD, there are numerous command codes; for detailed information, refer to the CMD command codes here.
