The Timeless Beauty of Salt Fields in Long Điền

Located 95 km from Ho Chi Minh City, many travelers venture to the salt fields of Long Điền to discover the simple yet enchanting life of the salt farmers. The town of Long Điền (Bà Rịa – Vũng Tàu) is renowned for its longstanding salt-making tradition.

In ancient times, salt was produced through the traditional method of seawater evaporation, establishing salt-making areas in An Ngãi commune and the town of Long Điền.

Across generations, the salt farmers of Long Điền have faithfully upheld the traditional salt-making craft passed down by their ancestors.

Born and raised in Central Vietnam, I deeply understand the hardships of salt farmers who toil the land and sky for their livelihood. Despite their weathered faces, they maintain optimism and simplicity.

To capture images in the salt fields of Long Điền, I ventured out with the locals, braving the scorching sun until noon. Despite the harsh sun, the laborers tirelessly harvest salt.

The annual salt harvest in Long Điền starts from the 9th lunar month of the previous year to the 4th lunar month of the following year.

Currently, there are nearly 300 salt-producing households in Long Điền district. The average income of salt workers is approximately only 200 thousand dong per day.

During the salt season, at the crack of dawn, salt farmers head to the fields to begin their work. They collect the crystallized salt into large heaps, let it drain, and then carry it back for storage, awaiting sale to traders. After harvesting, farmers continue to irrigate the fields for the next salt crop.

Despite the strenuous work and modest income, even facing losses when salt prices are low, the people of Long Điền persevere, holding onto their fields and profession, eager to preserve the legacy of their ancestors.
