5. English Premier League
The Premier League, commonly known as the English Premier League (EPL), is the top tier of football in England. It consists of 20 clubs and operates under a promotion and relegation system with the English Football League (EFL). The season runs from August to May, with each team playing 38 matches—against every other team home and away. Most games are scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays.
Founded on February 20, 1992, as the FA Premier League, the league was established after clubs from the Football League First Division decided to break away from the Football League, which has its origins in 1888, to capitalize on the television broadcast rights. A domestic deal worth £1 billion per year was signed for the 2013–14 season, with BSkyB and BT Group securing the rights to air 116 and 38 matches, respectively. The league generates €2.2 billion annually from both domestic and international television rights. By the 2014–15 season, clubs received a share of £1.6 billion in profits, with £2.4 billion distributed in the 2016–17 season.
The Premier League is the most-watched football league globally, broadcasting in 212 territories, reaching 643 million households, and attracting around 4.7 billion TV viewers. During the 2014–15 season, each match drew an average of 36,000 spectators, ranking second only to Germany’s Bundesliga, which had an average of 43,500 spectators. Most stadiums are filled to capacity, making the Premier League the number one football competition in UEFA’s coefficient ranking based on European club performance over the past five seasons, as of 2021.
Since its inception in 1992, 50 clubs have participated in the Premier League, but only seven have won the title: Manchester United (13 times), Manchester City (6), Chelsea (5), Arsenal (3), Blackburn Rovers, Leicester City, and Liverpool (1 each).
The 2021–22 Premier League season marked its 30th year as England’s top-tier professional football competition, and it was also the third season to feature the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.

8. World Cup 2022
The 2022 FIFA World Cup was a topic of intense interest in Vietnam, alongside online learning and entertainment. This global football championship, the 22nd edition, was held in Qatar from November 20 to December 18, 2022. It was the second time the World Cup was hosted in Asia (the first being in Japan and South Korea in 2002) and the first time it was held in an Arab and Muslim-majority nation. Qatar became the third Asian country to host the tournament. This edition introduced several technological advancements, including the Goal-line technology, VAR (Video Assistant Referee), the Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT), an upgraded 3D version of VAR, and a sensor embedded in the official ball, Al Rihla, to track its position. With an estimated cost of over $220 billion, this World Cup was the most expensive in history, though Qatari officials, including Nasser Al Khater, CEO of the organizing committee, claimed the actual cost was around $8 billion.
This World Cup was also the last with 32 participating teams, as the number will increase to 48 teams in 2026. To avoid Qatar's extreme heat, the tournament was scheduled for November and December. The shortened competition took place over 29 days with 64 matches spread across eight venues in five cities. The final was held on December 18, 2022, at the Lusail Stadium, coinciding with Qatar’s National Day.
Qatar automatically qualified as the host nation, while the remaining 31 spots were decided through qualifying rounds. This was Qatar's debut in the World Cup, but their performance was disappointing as they lost all three group-stage matches, becoming the first host nation to lose their opening match and the earliest host to be eliminated. France, the defending champions, were knocked out in the final by Argentina after a 3–3 draw and a 2–4 defeat in a penalty shootout. Argentina claimed their third World Cup title.
