1. Ford v. Ferrari (June 28th)
20th Century Fox announced the release of a movie about the 1966 Le Mans road race, coming to theaters on June 28, 2019. Directed by James Mangold (Logan), the film stars A-list actors Christian Bale and Matt Damon. Based on real events, the story focuses on the fierce rivalry between Ford and Ferrari at the world’s oldest endurance race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966.
After completing Adam McKay's project, Bale immediately joined the production of Ford v. Ferrari under the direction of James Mangold (Logan). To portray the driver Ken Miles, he had to shed the exact weight he had gained for his role in the Dick Cheney film.
Christian Bale is known for his extreme weight transformations. In 2003, he lost nearly 30 kg to portray a gaunt, frail figure in The Machinist (2004). As soon as that project wrapped, he hit the gym and regained 45 kg for his role as Batman in Batman Begins (2005). For American Hustle (2013), he had to bulk up, sporting a hefty belly. Later, he returned to his normal weight for the film Hostiles (2017), which was shot shortly after.
Ford v. Ferrari is one of Fox's biggest projects for the summer of 2019. Based on true events, the film details the intense competition between Ford and Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966.
The movie centers on a group of American engineers led by speed legend Carroll Shelby, alongside British driver Ken Miles. Henry Ford II pushes them to collaborate and defeat Ferrari in that year’s race. Matt Damon portrays Shelby, while Christian Bale plays Miles.

2. The New Mutants (August 2nd)
With its dark and gripping first trailer, The New Mutants promises to be a chilling superhero film. The movie follows a group of young mutants under the care of Dr. Cecilia Reyes (Alice Braga). As they begin to unlock their powers, disaster strikes, and their lives spiral out of control.
The current team of five young mutants has been confirmed: Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, Henry Zaga as Sunspot, and Blu Hunt as Mirage. However, director Josh Boone has hinted that a new character may also appear in this X-Men film.
In the original comics, The New Mutants team has seen many notable characters over the years, including Karma, Warpath, Warlock, Boom-Boom, and Cypher. Which of these iconic mutants will make their way into the movie? All five are exciting characters with potential for exploration.
Director Josh Boone also revealed that the setting for The New Mutants will take place in the present day. Could this mean the events occur after Logan, when most mutants are nearly extinct? Fans may even get a chance to see X-23 or another familiar X-Men character make a return. This opens a huge question for fans to speculate on.

However, Lance's world is turned upside down when he is transformed into a pigeon by Walter Beckett (voiced by Tom Holland), a quirky inventor who provides Lance with all his gadgets. Walter’s reasoning? “Pigeons are the perfect cover for spies because they’re everywhere, and nobody notices them.” As a pigeon, Lance is thrust into a series of chaotic and humorous situations, struggling to adjust to his new form. He’s pursued by a flirty female pigeon and has to awkwardly communicate by staring at his own tail. Will Lance be able to complete his mission or remain a pigeon forever?
Although the trailer is just two minutes long, it’s enough to show the hilarious chemistry between Lance and Walter, an unlikely duo of a world-class spy and a bumbling inventor. 8. Ad Astra (May 24)
Astronaut Roy McBride travels to the outer reaches of the solar system in search of his missing father, while also uncovering a mystery that threatens the survival of Earth. That's all we know so far about the film Ad Astra. However, don’t worry about the movie straying off course. The director, James Gray, is already receiving positive feedback following the success of *The Lost City of Z*.
Though Gray has yet to produce a blockbuster hit, the star power of Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones gives *Ad Astra* significant potential. Many hope this sci-fi epic will follow in the footsteps of *Gravity*, which earned $723 million, or *The Martian*, which grossed $630 million.
Produced by 20th Century Fox, *Ad Astra* has a relatively modest budget of $50 million—small by the standards of space-themed films. This news has somewhat diminished the immediate excitement around the movie. But with top-tier cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema at the helm, *Ad Astra* remains highly anticipated. It may very well be a miracle that a low-budget film could make such an impact.

9. X-Men: Dark Phoenix (June 7)
X-Men: Dark Phoenix is the next chapter in the famed mutant saga. Continuing the story after the events of *Apocalypse* in 2016, the X-Men face a new, far more dangerous force: the Dark Phoenix. This film is based on the legendary *Dark Phoenix Saga* comic series published by Marvel. The story focuses on Jean Grey (played by Sophie Turner), a mutant with telepathic abilities and the power to move objects with her mind. Jean, once a kind and courageous member of the X-Men, is forever changed after an accident in space, where she comes into contact with a powerful energy source. This event births a new, malevolent persona within her known as Phoenix, a force whose powers far exceed Jean's, and whose bloodthirsty tendencies make her a serious threat.
Phoenix is a savage persona that inhabits Jean Grey. When it emerges, it takes the form of a massive fiery bird with the ability to manipulate matter in terrifying ways. Phoenix’s destructive power was key in defeating Apocalypse, the seemingly invincible villain from the previous *X-Men* film.
The first trailer for *X-Men: Dark Phoenix* has recently been released, and it promises an intense cinematic experience. This is the 12th installment in the X-Men franchise, bringing back familiar faces like James McAvoy (Professor X), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), and Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique). New to the cast is the talented Jessica Chastain, who plays the villainous white-haired shapeshifter known as Smith.
Along with its striking visuals, *Dark Phoenix* has garnered praise for its screenplay. Sophie Turner, the film's lead, has called it a “turning point” in superhero cinema, highlighting its dark emotional depth and shocking plot twists. She emphasized that for the first time, the focus of the X-Men story isn't on the male heroes like Wolverine, Charles Xavier, or Magneto—it's about the women, especially the relationship between Jean Grey, Mystique, and the antagonist, Smith. Tye Sheridan (Cyclops) echoed her sentiments, describing the film as more psychological than action-driven. He compared its style to *X-Men: First Class*, stating that it steers clear of the typical Marvel formula.
