In Vietnamese culture, it is believed that the altar of Wealth God should face the door. According to Feng Shui principles, placing the altar in this direction allows for observing guests and inviting wealth into the home.
2. Guidelines for decorating the Wealth God altar during Tet holiday
The Wealth God's altar is often inscribed with the four characters 'Prosperity and Treasure Advance' or the couplet 'Earth nurtures white jade – Ground capable of producing golden brilliance,' symbolizing the desire for luck and prosperity for the homeowner.
The statues of Wealth God and Earth Deity should be placed on either side of the altar. It is recommended to position Wealth God on the left and Earth Deity on the right.
Place three containers of rice, salt, and water at the center of the altar. Remember to replace these containers only at the end of the year.
The incense bowl should be positioned at the center of the altar. Choose a ceramic incense bowl for easy cleaning, adding solemnity and sacredness to the altar. Use a damp Water cloth to clean the altar as Water overcomes Fire. Avoid shifting the incense bowl during cleaning to prevent any impact on luck and wealth.
Arrange the flower vase on the right and the tray of five fruits on the left. Typically, families use flowers such as roses, chrysanthemums, and money plants. The fruit tray usually consists of five different fruits symbolizing the five elements, like pomelo and green bananas, reflecting the characteristics of each region. If the altar is small, you can place the fruit tray on the ground in the center, close to the altar of Wealth God and Earth Deity.
For the offering, remove the tray and arrange five water bowls in the shape of a cross, representing the five directions and elements. The three-legged toad should be placed on the left, next to the fruit tray, to attract wealth, luck, and positive energy. Position the toad statue facing outward in the morning and inward in the evening.
The water bowl filled with rose petals should be placed above, signifying the preservation of wealth from flowing away.
