Preparing Baby Formula for Newborns
Preparing baby formula for newborns is not as simple as one might think. Incorrect preparation can have adverse effects, as the baby may not absorb the nutrients properly, leading to slow weight gain or digestive issues such as diarrhea, constipation, and other risks.
So, what's the best way to prepare baby formula?
1. Clean and Sterilize Formula Mixing Tools
- Ensure you have all the necessary tools for preparing formula: spoon, nipple, baby bottle, etc.
- Thoroughly wash the tools with warm water or baby bottle cleanser.
- Soak the tools in boiling water for about 3-5 minutes and then remove. Note: Using a sterilizer machine is more convenient, but when selecting baby bottles, choose ones that are safe and can withstand high heat.

2. Wash hands thoroughly before preparing baby formula
- Since babies' digestive systems are fragile, especially those not breastfed, our hands can sometimes be the source of harmful bacteria transmission to babies. Therefore, to ensure the best for the baby, hands must be washed thoroughly before preparing to completely eliminate harmful bacteria.
3. Prepare water for mixing baby formula
- Note: The water used to mix baby formula must have a fluoride concentration below 7mg/liter and be clean. If the fluoride concentration is high, mothers should use bottled water. Boil water and let it cool to 50-70 degrees Celsius for mixing for the baby (depending on the type of formula).

4. Prepare Formula According to Manufacturer's Instructions
- Depending on the type of baby formula, there are different mixing instructions.
- Mix the formula according to the manufacturer's instructions. Measure the exact amount of formula needed for the baby: typically, each formula container will have a measuring spoon for powdered formulas, while for bar-shaped formulas like imported Meiji milk from Japan, simply take out the required number of milk tablets for each serving. Diluting the formula will not provide adequate nutrition for the baby, while preparing it too thick can adversely affect the baby's kidneys.
- Stir the formula thoroughly until dissolved in water.
- Check the temperature before feeding the baby to avoid burning or causing discomfort to the baby's tongue.
Positions for Bottle-Feeding
Note:
- Do not use prepared baby formula after it has been mixed for 2 hours.
- Avoid heating formula in the microwave as uneven heating can cause burns or discomfort to the baby's tongue. It's possible to heat the formula using a bottle warmer or by placing the milk bottle in a bowl of hot water for a while.
- Do not heat the formula for more than 10 minutes as it can encourage bacterial growth.
