In the village of Kandkoor, India, locals honor scorpions by allowing them to crawl over their faces, ears, and even into their mouths as a tribute to the spiritual realm.
Embracing Scorpions: A Unique Ritual in India
Every year, during the Hindu festival of Naga Panchami, an intriguing sight unfolds in the temple of Kandkoor, southern India. Here, scorpions are released onto the bodies of people of all ages, men and women alike.
Many venomous scorpions roam freely over the faces, ears, and even enter the mouths of the villagers. Yet, none in the village feel fear towards these creatures.

The festival not only draws locals but also pilgrims from afar. It aims to honor Kondamai – the scorpion goddess in Hinduism.
In addition to scorpions, locals also bring coconuts and oil here to offer to the spirits, praying for health and wealth.

Before leaving the temple situated atop the hill, participants in the festival catch scorpions released around and place them on their bodies and faces. They believe that the scorpion goddess will protect them from being stung by these insects, preserving their lives.
According to the New Indian Express, villagers claim that no one has ever been bitten by a scorpion. However, public opinion in India believes that there have been fatal cases due to the venom of this creature, but local authorities have not reported them to the government.

Another version of the Naga Panchami festival involves capturing venomous snakes from the area and confining them. On the day of the event, the organizers will release the snakes. People from all over flock, bringing milk pots. They believe that by praying and feeding the cobras milk, they will receive blessings from the Almighty.
The snake festival takes place in Kapari, Uttar Pradesh. In this village, children are exposed to snakes from a young age, so no one appears fearful. Nowadays, under pressure from the government and public opinion, many places have replaced venomous snakes with harmless fake ones.
