Dragon Ball Super unveiled the horrifying reason behind this catastrophe, revealing a seemingly insignificant antagonist, Pilaf, as the instigator.
In a concise flashback chapter, Dragon Ball Super revisits Future Trunks' timeline. At a crucial moment, when Trunks was still a child and the battle against Androids 17 and 18 continued, Goku succumbed to a heart virus and passed away. With the strongest warrior gone, the Z fighter group couldn't defeat the two Androids created by Dr. Gero. Subsequently, Gohan and Bulma desperately sought the Dragon Balls.
The story of what transpired in Future Trunks' timeline is disclosed at the end of chapter 2 of the manga Dragon Ball Super. Pilaf, along with his henchmen Mai and Shu, collected all the Dragon Balls to summon the dragon god Shenron. However, Pilaf ignored Shu's warning and wished to become young again.
