Just a few days after the release of the Windows 10 October 2018 update, users quickly discovered a serious issue: data deletion on certain systems.
The Windows 10 October 2018 Update Fixes Data Deletion
Microsoft immediately halted the release of Windows 10 version 1809 to investigate and address the issue. Good news for users is that the Windows 10 October 2018 update, which caused data deletion, has been fixed. This means users can now upgrade to the latest Windows 10 update without worrying about data loss.
The Windows 10 October 2018 Update Resolves Data Deletion
In a recent blog post, Microsoft stated that the latest Windows 10 update is currently only available to Windows Insiders. Deployment of the update will proceed widely once no issues are reported, and the company will also limit the number of users installing Windows 10 version 1809.
Excerpt from the blog post:
Just two days after its release, the company was forced to temporarily halt and limit the number of users installing the Windows 10 October 2018 Update. Despite reports of data loss being minimal (only accounting for 1% of the total users who installed version 1809), the issue of data loss is extremely serious.
The company has acknowledged the issue of file deletion, data related to errors in the Known Folder Redirection (KFR) feature. If the feature was enabled previously, intentionally or inadvertently/automatically, but the files remained in their original location instead of being redirected to other folders or locations, then these files would be deleted.
This error arose as Microsoft attempted to fix another bug in KFR previously known in the Windows 10 April 2018 update, specifically where some users reported this feature creating an empty duplicate of the root directory. To address this issue, Microsoft has added additional code to delete empty directories.
According to Microsoft, the company has identified and resolved file deletion issues on Windows 10 October 2018, so users can rest assured they won't lose data anymore. Additionally, the company promises to support users who lost data after upgrading to October 2018 by restoring the lost data, though they cannot guarantee a complete restoration of this data.
