TikTok actively monitors all content you input within the in-app browser

In a recently disclosed study, Felix Krause reveals that TikTok tracks and comprehends everything you type and interact with on the in-app browser. It could be simple content or actions on a particular website. More dangerously, TikTok might even acquire sensitive information like credit card details or passwords that you input.

When clicking on a link or advertisement within TikTok, it directs you to a browser crafted by TikTok itself. At this point, you remain within the TikTok app instead of transitioning to your device's default browser (e.g., Safari or Chrome). This is the in-app browser.

By embedding snippets of JavaScript code into websites, it can notify TikTok about your activities on any webpage. Felix Krause emphasizes that TikTok does this deliberately, not as a result of errors or randomness. However, TikTok representatives deny that it's created to track users on the in-app browser, stating its use for debugging, error identification, and monitoring its functionality.

Not exclusive to TikTok, Felix Krause also observes apps (on iPhone) using in-app browsers such as Facebook, Instagram, Messenger. He notes that all of them inject code into the webpages users view, but TikTok uniquely monitors user-input content and tracks more activities.

A piece of advice for everyone is to avoid using the in-app browser to access websites. Instead, open the link in the default browser of your device for a safer experience.
