Popular social networks like Instagram have been actively working to prevent self-harming content on their platforms by banning graphic images related to this issue. Last year, TikTok also implemented policies banning advertisements for 'fasting' apps and weight loss supplements promoting 'negative body image views.' Now, these platforms are intensifying efforts to protect users from self-harming actions.
Now, these platforms are intensifying efforts to protect users from self-harming actions. Facebook recently announced that Instagram will start displaying links leading to information from organizations addressing eating disorder issues when users search for related content. TikTok is also rolling out new features to combat misinformation about eating disorders in collaboration with the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA).
Instagram's New Features and Collaborations
Alongside, Facebook's social media platform will display contact information for eating disorder organizations in specific countries, including Beat in the UK, the National Eating Disorder Information Centre in Canada, and the Butterfly Foundation in Australia. For instance, if you encounter someone's post with a negative body image perspective and feel affected, you will also find these help-providing resources. Furthermore, you will be able to message or chat directly with a friend from these organizations in the coming weeks if you need assistance overcoming challenging moments you may be facing.
Instagram is also soliciting feedback from various experts worldwide to understand how to address emerging issues related to eating disorders. These new efforts are part of Instagram's third annual National Eating Disorder Awareness Week celebration in the US.
For TikTok, the platform will display quick access to NEDA's hotline information to provide treatment and support starting this week when you search for phrases related to eating disorders such as #edrecovery and #proana. The music and video service will also display tips to check posts likely to lead to self-harming behavior, as well as how to focus on positives and aid someone struggling with an eating disorder.
Throughout the remainder of the year, TikTok will provide public service announcements (PSAs) aimed at helping individuals recover from eating disorders in collaboration with NEDA. The short-form video-sharing platform commits to continue refining its policies on content glorifying eating disorders and improving the detection of harmful content.
