TikTok has introduced significant updates to its Community Guidelines, aiming to maintain a healthy, safe, and enjoyable environment for both content creators and viewers. While the previous version primarily prohibited 'adult content involving minors,' the new version delves into 'Grooming Behavior' (understood as befriending for sexual exploitation), child exploitation, explicitly stating that TikTok does not allow 'content related to deviant behavior of minors.'
TikTok prohibits videos causing misunderstandings and engaging in illegal activities below the age of adolescence.

According to the company, 'Deviant behavior of minors' means videos that 'depict minors consuming, possessing, or suspected of consuming alcohol, illegal drugs, or tobacco.' As Wired notes, the new rules could impact all videos of teenagers using Juul or other e-cigarette products. Additionally, the platform now has stricter rules regarding firearms, not allowing the 'mention, sale, or promotion of weapons, ammunition, firearm accessories, or explosives,' and explicitly stating that it does not allow videos instructing how to manufacture weapons.
TikTok, owned by ByteDance in China, has recently faced criticism for censorship issues. Last year, the platform banned the account of a teenager who made a video urging viewers to investigate the detention of Uighur Muslims in China. Almost the entire military also prohibited the use of this app on government-issued devices, deeming it a security risk.
Notably, The Guardian uncovered TikTok employees being instructed to censor topics critical of China's socialist system and LGBT content in some markets last year. Wired reported that the moderation overhaul only pertained to TikTok groups based in California. Additionally, the company told the press that nothing in the new rules would restrict posts deemed sensitive by the Chinese government.
