Regarding TikTok's stance, in a statement to NewsGuard, a spokesperson for the social media giant stated that they do not allow 'misinformation and fakes' to exist and will clean up such information from the platform. At the end of 2020, the platform removed nearly 350,000 videos related to the 2020 US presidential election.
TikTok Mobile and TikTok PC utilize AI to filter and automatically remove flagged or sent videos for review. However, this approach is not sufficient to detect and remove videos containing misleading or false content.
The report from NewsGuard comes at an unfavorable time for TikTok. TikTok's Chief Operating Officer, Vanessa Pappas, will testify alongside executives from other companies at today's Senate hearing.
