Tips for playing Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid.
1. Build a team of 3 characters.
The essence of the game allows you to succeed with most character and Megazord combinations, so if you're not familiar with fighting game experiences, don't worry, experiment with any character you think looks cool.
But if you're a competitive fighting game player, you might want to opt for a balanced team with supports to enhance your playstyle. A combination of character archetypes can give you an advantage thanks to the support switch mechanic. This means you can immediately switch leaders with a better-equipped character to handle the tactics you're up against. A strong and balanced team like Tommy Oliver, Jason Lee Scott, and Mastodon Sentry will be a good starting point to understand the game's mechanics.
Whether you want to build a balanced team or if you want to throw your 3 Rangers and favorite villain into the fray, you'll always have some great power combinations.
2. Analyze attack moves and combos.
Like most 3v3 tag team fighting games, Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid uses the Light/Medium/Heavy/Special attack system. In general principle, you can chain any normal attack move with itself (called Target Combo) or into one of the bigger powers. Light > Medium > Heavy > Special is the standard attack chain from any position (standing, crouching, and jumping).
As attacks and special moves are executed with one or two button combinations, you can focus on movement, spacing, and timing to unleash combos. The challenging aspect of Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid is its free-form combo system. Stringing a combo together can be highly intricate, with nearly limitless creative potential due to its fluid juggling system. It's best to seek out some combo videos for inspiration.
3. AntiAir techniques.
Each character possesses at least one AntiAir move designed to counter airborne attacks when timed correctly. These are also the 'unblockable in the air' moves, and if your AntiAir move is timed right, you can surely teach your opponent a memorable lesson. Check the command list in-game in the pause menu to learn your character's AntiAir attacks.
4. EX attack moves.
EX attack moves are unstoppable techniques performed with the Light + Special attack combo, consuming one of your Super bars. If you're under pressure and anticipate that the opponent will attack you, then combining Light + Special is a good idea to blow through the enemy's offensive. EX attack moves can also be quite risky, as they can easily leave you vulnerable if blocked.
5. Super Attack - Mega Damage.
Unleash a Heavy + Special attack with at least 2 Super bars to deploy the character's most powerful offensive capability, known as the Super Attack. The name says it all, it deals mega damage. Almost any attack move can be canceled into a Super Attack (including EX attacks).
6. Utilize support characters.
Call for assistance whenever your leader is active, and you can summon aid without interrupting your attacks. Press one of your two assist buttons to bring in one of two support characters into the fray and unleash their special attacks. Note that there's a cooldown period after each summon, so use your support characters wisely.
After exhausting your support, you can switch leaders and continue calling for support with the corresponding buttons. This is incredibly powerful and is a defining mechanism of the game. With a 'workshop,' you'll be able to execute a continuous barrage of attacks from multiple directions and multiple characters.
7. Megazord Ultra.
With the introduction of a new Megazord gauge in the 2.3 update (Season 3), the activation conditions for Megazord Ultra have been enhanced. Press both support buttons (with at least 2 Megazord bars) to summon your chosen Megazord, for assistance. While summoned, the 3 usual attack buttons (Light, Medium, and Heavy) command your colossal cavalry to perform a unique attack such as hurling a thundering lightning sword onto the battlefield with high damage potential.
8. Defensive Techniques.
Tired of being locked down, blocking strings of attacks? Execute a Special move immediately after blocking an enemy's pushback attack, this will grant you an opening.
When it comes to defense, you also have to worry about being thrown and learning how to counter is just as important as understanding how to push back attacks. Throws are unblockable attacks at close range. It not only tests your reaction time but also your ability to 'read' your opponent. You can counter this by using your own throw command when you're being thrown.
