Effectively manage your web links with this easy-to-follow guide
Adding links to online articles and websites enhances the depth of digital text and boosts its visibility on search engines. You can cite almost any website by duplicating and pasting the link into your email, text message, or document. The process may vary slightly depending on the computer, device, or software you're using. For lengthy addresses, consider using a link shortening service.
Instructions
For Windows and Mac Users

Duplicate and paste a link from the address bar. If you wish to share or bookmark a website you're visiting, you can duplicate the link from the address bar of your browser:
- Click on the address in your browser. This may reveal the complete link if parts were concealed during browsing.
- If the link isn't already highlighted, select the entire link. Typically, clicking on the link will automatically highlight it. If not, press Ctrl/⌘ Cmd+A to highlight the entire link.
- Right-click the selected link and choose 'Copy,' or press Ctrl/⌘ Cmd+C.
- Position your cursor where you want to paste the link and press Ctrl/⌘ Cmd+V.

Locate the link you wish to duplicate. Links can be duplicated from various sources such as websites, emails, Word documents, and virtually any other application.
- Links in web pages and emails are often indicated by being underlined and having a distinct color compared to the surrounding text. Many links are represented by buttons or images.

Right-click on the link. If the link is an image, right-clicking on it will provide the option to Copy.
- For Mac users with a single mouse button, hold down Ctrl and click to access the right-click menu.

Choose the 'Copy link' option. When a link is copied, it is stored in your clipboard for pasting elsewhere. The exact wording of this option may vary depending on the software you are using. Here are some common examples:
- Chrome - 'Copy link address'
- Firefox - 'Copy Link Location'
- Internet Explorer - 'Copy shortcut'
- Safari - 'Copy Link'
- Word - 'Copy Hyperlink'

Position your cursor where you intend to insert the link. Once you have copied the link, you can insert it wherever you can input text. Simply click to position your cursor at the desired location for pasting the link.
- You can paste the link into any text input field, including emails, Word documents, your browser's address bar, Facebook messages, and more.

Paste the link. There are multiple methods for pasting a copied link:
- Right-click where your cursor is located and choose 'Paste.'
- Press Ctrl+V (Windows) or ⌘ Cmd+V (Mac).
- If available, click on the Edit menu and select 'Paste.' Note that not all programs have a visible Edit menu.

Insert the link as a hyperlink with customized text. Certain software like blogs, email platforms, and word processors enable you to alter the displayed text instead of showing the entire link address. This allows you to create a hyperlink with a phrase or word:
- Position your cursor where you want the hyperlink.
- Click the 'Insert Hyperlink' button, typically found below the text field or in the Insert menu of word processors. This button often features a chainlink icon.
- Enter your desired text in the 'Text to display' field, which will appear as the clickable link.
- Paste the link into the 'Address,' 'URL,' or 'Link to' field. Simply click in the field and press Ctrl+V (Windows) or ⌘ Cmd+V (Mac) to paste the link you copied.
Mobile Devices

Locate the link you wish to duplicate. Links can be duplicated from web browsers, emails, and various other applications. Links may appear as standard text links or as images.
- The process remains similar across different types of mobile devices (Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows mobile, etc.).
Long-press the link you intend to duplicate. Once you've identified the link, press and hold it until a new menu appears. It may take a moment for the menu to appear.

Select the 'Copy' option. The wording may differ based on the application you're using. Look for phrasing similar to these examples:
- Copy
- Copy link address
- Copy link URL
- Copy address

Position your cursor where you wish to insert the link. Once you've copied the link, you can insert it into any text field. Simply tap on the text field to place your cursor.

Long-press your cursor. Release your finger after a brief moment. A new menu will appear.
- If you're using an iOS device (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch), release your finger when the magnifying glass appears.
- If you're using an Android device, release your finger when the cursor indicator appears.

Tap on 'Paste' to insert your copied link. In the menu that appears, you'll find the option to 'Paste.' Tapping on it will insert the copied address into the text field.

Copying and pasting a link from a text message (Android). If you've received a text message containing a link on your Android device, you may need to follow additional steps to copy it, especially if there is accompanying text.
- Long-press on the message containing the link.
- Tap the 'Copy' option that appears, usually represented by an icon of two stacked pages at the top of the screen.
- Paste the copied text where you want to insert the link, and then manually remove any extra text from the original message.
Utilizing a Link Shortener

Utilize a link shortening service when you need to text or share a link on Twitter. Website URLs can become lengthy, particularly for pages buried deep within a site. Link shortening services enable you to create a condensed version of a lengthy address that can be easily shared via text, tweet, or other platforms.

Copy the link you intend to distribute. Employ the aforementioned methods to copy the link you wish to shorten and share.

Visit a link shortening website. Numerous services are available for shortening links, and most operate in a similar manner:
- bit.ly
- goo.gl
- ow.ly
- tinyurl.com

Paste your lengthy link into the designated field on the shortening site. Click on the field and press Ctrl/⌘ Cmd+V, or long-press and select 'Paste,' to insert your lengthy link into the designated field on the shortening site.

Tap or click the 'Shorten' or 'Shrink' button to generate a new, shortened link. You'll receive a brief version of the link that utilizes the service's format rather than the original site's.

Copy the shortened URL. You can copy it using the methods described above for regular links, or simply tap or click the 'Copy' button often provided by such sites.

Paste your shortened URL. Now that you've copied the shortened URL, you can paste it just like any other link. Consider providing some context for the link, as the purpose may not be immediately clear from the shortened address.
