What happens when we Sleep or Shutdown our machines?
Shutdown involves a coordinated operation between software and hardware. When you initiate a Shutdown command, all open programs receive a timed notification from the operating system to stop any file reading or writing before the system powers off.

How do Sleep and Shutdown modes differ?
As far as I know, there are 2 main differences between these 2 modes, Shutdown and Sleep.
Firstly, it's about startup time. When you put your machine in Sleep mode, it restarts very quickly, just a few seconds and the computer is ready for you to use. Additionally, because all tasks are saved in RAM, you can resume work immediately from where you left off.

While there's a difference in power consumption between Shutdown and the computer being off compared to Sleep mode where the machine is at its lowest power state, according to Energy Star, we only save about 1 to 2 watts by shutting down the computer compared to putting it in Sleep mode.
What are the advantages of Sleeping and Shutting down your machine?
In my opinion, these two modes heavily depend on your usage needs and work nature. To make the most appropriate choice between Sleeping and Shutting down your machine. Let's explore some advantages of these two modes.

This is considered one of the most debated factors in the Sleep vs. Shutdown topic. Previously, computer components were more prone to damage if the computer was turned on and off too frequently, especially with hard drives and thermal management.

In Sleep mode, the machine consumes energy to keep files and open programs stored in RAM. This slightly increases power usage, which some may find wasteful when the machine is not in use during this 'sleep' period.

For instance, if you're working continuously on your laptop all day and need a short break to grab lunch, it's best to leave the machine in Sleep mode. Shutting down is preferable when you've completed your tasks and won't be using the laptop for an extended period ahead.
