1. Betta Fish - The Fighter
Betta fish (commonly known as Betta Splendens) is a long-standing ornamental fish in Thailand, later distributed to many other countries and bred into various strains. It is a popular fish in the market belonging to the Osphronemidae family, displaying vibrant colors and thicker fins, with more diverse fin types compared to its wild counterparts. Betta fish are small, with adults ranging from 6 to 8 cm in length, depending on the strain.
Betta fish breathe directly from the air through a complex organ on their heads to supplement their oxygen intake through gills underwater. They will die if not exposed to the water surface. Males have aggressive tendencies and are ready to fight each other, making them a favorite pastime for humans.
Due to this nature, males are usually kept separately and do not require oxygenation through an oxygen machine. They prefer still water and can live in confined spaces. Regarding reproduction, male and female fish mate in a unique process called wrapping or embracing. The male will build a bubble nest and collect the eggs laid by the female fish, placing them in the bubble nest. The eggs will hatch in about 3-4 days. Their diet is simple, consisting of bloodworms, brine shrimp, and pellets. Young fish only eat infusoria, micro worms, etc. Betta fish are easy to keep and have strong vitality, making them suitable for busy individuals who may not pay much attention to them. It has since been hybridized and developed into many breeds with vastly different colors and body shapes from the original carp. The variety in body shapes and tails is remarkable, with some having long bodies, others short, and even some with multiple tails (2-3 tails).
The coloration has also become more diverse, with the most common being orange, black-orange, and red-white. Goldfish are difficult to sex, so only experienced hobbyists can distinguish between genders and induce breeding. They can live from 6 to 8 years in a tank environment.
